Default Road Trip

This thread is addressed to those of you that have Z06 "Garage Queens" and to those of you that are concerned about taking your cars our for an extended road trip

I just completed a road trip in my 04 Z06. It was 3760 miles from Pennsylvania to Louisiana and then To Orlando, Florida and then back home to PA.

My wife and I found the Corvette to be the MOST comfortable car we have ever owned for this type of trip. The seats fit us so well, that on one leg we drove for over 13 hours and when we arrived at our destination, we didn't even feel tired. (I was tired of driving, but no back aches.) I am 60 and she a bit less. I might add that we also own and have made this trip in Lincolns and also my GMC pickup.

The car did great. I got 26.7 MPG average for the entire trip, with the average speed of 61 MPH. (That shows that we did some in-town driving.) We also had a few "banzi runs" to check out the speed capabilities. I purged the master cylinder one time when the fluid looked like it was a bit dark. (Thanks Ranger) No oil consumed for the entire trip.

If you have never had your car on a trip like this, you don't know what you are missing. It certainly did not have any problems keeping up with traffic. In Florida, the odometer rolled over to 11,000 miles. I believe that it pulls much harder now than when we started the trip. (My other GM small block vehicles had a noticable improvement in performance after 11K or 12K miles.)

I will be cleaning and waxing the car the next couple of days and putting it away for a sunny day. I did pick up at least two or three rock chips that I know of, but that is part of driving the car.

Don't be skeered - put em on the road!!

Very nice. I purchased my 01 QS Z Oct. 05 from Delaware. The 1400 mile trip was comfortable and uneventful. Managed 26 mpg all the way back to Louisiana.

i have taken my 02 z to the north georgia mountains twice. its a 700mile drive from south fla. we also average over 26mpg on that trip. great road car. i put the partition in for the road and that helps cut down a little road and exhaust noise. i don't mind the seats at all. mine has 40k on her and runs great with no issues. had 25k on it when i bought it. its definitely no garage queen. the way i see it, it can depreciate in the garage or with me putting miles on it. i'm planning on wearing it out. you can always replace parts

we just got back from a road trip to a business conference in tucson from el paso. Although only about a 4 to 4 1/2 hour drive, our thoughts were the same, the most comfortable car I have ever taken on a road trip, and i'm 6'6".

avergae MPG about 25.5 with cruise set at 83 for the most part, along with about an hour or so following a couple others at about 15% more.

i totally agree. the day i bought my Z i drove it to st. louis. the salesman looked at me like i was crazy when i told him i was taking it straight there for the weekend. it also might have had something to do with the fact that it was snowing.

also two weeks later my fiance and i took it to cincinnati for thanksgiving. makes an 8 hour drive fly by. plus i got to have some fun along the way. the 27mpg was nice too. way better than my SUV.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've taken several long road trips in my Z. From northern NJ a few times to Bowling Green and also once to Florida. It's a great way to make good travel time while getting great mpg's. On the Florida trip I averaged 29 for the whole ride. Also had no problem making it from Bowling Green to home non-stop other than food and gas. Felt like I could have kept going further. The best traveling car made, and it also has great luggage capacity.

The first road trip in my 04 Z06 was when I drove it home from the dealership in NC where I purchased it new with 5 miles on the clock to San Jose, CA where I live. It was 3700 miles of pure fun. I must agree with the comfort factor on long trips. I have a spinal fusion and found that I was able to tolerate many more miles per day than I thought I might.

Next to purchasing the car, which was my first Vette and my dream car, the trip was one of my favorite experiences ever. The C5 Z06 is still one of the prettiest and coolest cars ever and to my eye, much nicer looking than the C6 Z06, although I do sincerely admire the performance enhancements that it represents. I wouldn't mind owning one some day, but definintely look forward to getting a C5 Z06 back in my stable. I've got to get my two kids through college first and then I will be looking for somebody's garage queen and make up for all the miles they haven't put on it yet!

I drove from Long Island to Bangor Maine & back once & I drove from Long Island to Sarasota Florida & back once. Both trips were great! I thought the Corvette was really comfortable. It was a pleasant ride both trips. I could drive this car to Vegas & back with no problem. Gas mileage Is great, seats are comfortable & I like the ride of the Z alot. All I need Is alot of cash & cd's & I'm good to go.~Great car to drive any distance

My Z06 is not only my most comfortable road trip car, but gets the best highway fuel mileage too. Hats off to GM for engineering that combination!

I started off by driving mine 1500 miles to get it home, and it was a wonderful way to get to know the car well.

I bought mine in Pensacola Florida and drove it home to Va Beach. It was about 1050 miles through three storms and even some hail. Since then I have done a round trip to Nashville and one to Atlanta and the Z made the trip fun. Besides where else can you find a car that gets 30 MPG on the highway that drives and handles like this. 74k miles and counting on mine now! Cant wait to roll over 100k with it.

Hi FlyBob -

Sounds like a fun trip!

I have driven mine as far as Miami from my home near Peoria Illinois.

Just an outstanding automobile.

I am planning a color run around Lake Superior in late Sept or early Oct next year - watch for details - should be a lot of fun!

best regards -

Hi Mqqn - Make sure that you post the color run on the forum. Lots of us might want to go. There are also some nice colors here in Western PA.

I also forgot in the original thread that my wife has a fused back and in the "past" it has been very painful for her to ride for long periods of time. Not so in the Corvette. She probably likes the seats better than me.
