The Corvette has had this since the C4. It is there so you can see the shifter at night. There is no need to turn it off because it doesn't mess up your night vision.

Actually my C3 has one also except it's located on the top of the center console right on the trailing edge of the dash pad.

I guess there's less need for it with an A4, but it still makes for some darn fine looking night photography... Bone stock sports car interiors don't get much sexier looking than this...
yep i really like mine. when i first got the car i thought there was a switch for it i just couldn't find! i love how you can see everything when you look that way but don't even notice it's there otherwise.
