Got this Maxell FM transmitter on Ebay for $20 and it works great with the new Ipod Shuffle. The only problem is that at very low volume there's a little static but at higher volume while driving it's clear.
AFAIK, you cannot compare any FM modulators with true hardwired units. I've used FM modulators for about 6 months now, and am not satisfied with their performance in any of my 3 vehicles. I hope to do a hardwired setup in at least one of my cars soon since I've heard there is a night/day difference in the audio quality.

It might be marginally okay for you FRC guys with the antennas in the windshield, but for anyone with their antennas on the rear fender (like me), the distance is too far for most FM transmitters I tried to make the grade. Not even close. Sounded like I was listening to the worst AM radio station since Marconi invented radio. Ipod2Car is a much better way to go. Cleaner, much cleaner.

i had an fm jobby, every time i took a drive thru counties - i would find my signal busted in on by yet-another-local-radio station
the ipod2car is simple as opening a tin of dog food to install
and much tastier -
no hiss
no interupts
no crackle
Ever.
and its charged up at the same time
and my bose head unit can control the ipod so i can leave it locked up in the center console
its great that $20 is doin' it for you, but --> comparing it to a hardwire setup ... im not so sure

I've tried 3 different types of fm modulatores, one for self, wife and daughter. I haven't been impressed with any of them in the city. They work ok in the country, but 99% of my driving is in the city. I find I constantly have to change frequencys on the transmitter. It is so irritating that I stopped using mine.

I agree, there is no comparison. I tried the FM modulator first and it ended up being a waste of money.
