Default Question about A/C

Several days ago, my car started to develop a sewing machine kind of noise that was getting loud little by little. After reviewing the situation, i realize that turning the A/C off the noise dissapear. The A/C still works fine when engaged and the sewing machine noise comes and goes but it is getting embarrasing to be stop at a traffic light when this happens.
Any suggestions about the motive? Could be the compressor clutch? If so, would it be repairable without replacing the compressor?
Your input will be gladly apreciatte!!!

Mine is doing the same thing. I replaced the idlers and belts hoping that would solve the issue. Still makes the noise, but at 62K I was due for the belts anyway. Mine needs a compressor. I bought a compressor, dryer and orifice tube. It is highly recommended that you do the dryer and tube along with the compressor. I also got a new water pump since it has to be removed to change the compressor. I searched every where for the best deal on parts, especially since an OEM compressor (DO NOT use a rebuilt unit) lists for over $700. I ended up getting all of the stuff of Ebay from a seller called "Thepartsladi". All new, in the box OEM GM Delco stuff. Just under $600 shipped to my door for the compressor, dryer and water pump. If you have a 2000 or earlier, there is a bolt that needs to be ordered from your dealer as well. Part number for the bolt is 11518775. Let me know if you need any other info.

Thank you Ron for the extend of your answer. I just was hoping that was a little more inexpensive solution, specially if I need to add the cost of labor to clean and vaccum the A/C circuit, etc, etc. But is a Vette and price goes that way.
I was also looking at ebay, let see what happens.
thank you again
