Default AC recirculate question...

Last big question for the day, just another one of those things I’ve always meant to ask about

I’ve noticed my AC, even while set to recirculate, brings in a lot of outside fumes… Not so much engine odors from my Z but more ambient smells, say like when a bus passes, etc., or worse (like a sewage plant ). Also when the flow direction is set to “face & floor”, for lack of a better term, some cold air flows from the window defrost area often creating a condensation spot on the windscreen during our humid Hawaiian days. When cycling the recirculate switch I do hear the flap (?) opening and closing and there is a difference in the volume of airflow & temperature.

So is this a normal thing, anyone else experience something similar? I’m not too concerned I guess, just curious. Worse case I’ll have the dealership take a look as it’s still under warranty.

TIA & Mahalo!!!

Depends on what you mean by a lot. Recirculate does not mean all the air is recirculated since that could be dangerous if there was an exhaust leak into the passenger cabin. They usually only recirculate 80% of the air.

I'm gonna claim ignorance here, I didn't realize that fact... It makes sense, so I'm guessing its working as it should. In the situations when I do smell something from outside it’s generally something pretty extreme, like the sewage plant example (we have one on base I pass from time-to-time). Sometimes that 20% is still pretty pungent stuff!

Appreciate the help & thanks for squaring me away on this one

Mahalo!!!
