Default MBA shift **** questions

So my shift **** came in today and I cant figure out two things:

1) What are the plastic circles for?
2) How do I screw the shift **** on tight AND get the emblem to be right side up?

Didn't the **** come with a jamb nut? It's probably 9/16-18 thread pitch which you might be able to find in a well stocked hardware store.
Maybe the plastic discs are used as spacers to clock the **** in the desired position?
I have a black HURST six speed **** on my oem shifter. It came with a jamb nut, but I wanted to lower the **** as far as possible. I placed a buttonhead 1/4-20 screw (as a shim) in the machined slot at the top. This took a little experimentation to find just the right "shim". It allowed me to screw the **** down tightly, clocking the pattern perfectly. I also used a light application of blue LOCTITE.
