I am looking to purchase a car that is 10 hrs away. The seller has a lien on the title that is less than what he is asking for the car. The bank that has the title isnt local. So how is the best safest way to handle the sale. I want to make one trip either by driving out or maybe flying out and driving the car back. Advice needed. Thanks alot.
I had a check made out to the bank for the full amount. I used financing. They settled up with the P.O. With your own check, you could make out one check to the bank and one to the owner. Doesn't get you the title, as the lien release will be to the seller.
When I bought my 02 Z, I had the exact same circumstances. I assume you are going to be financing. My bank sent a pay off check to the sellers bank, and the info on where to send the title (my address). And then sent me a check for the difference, made payable to the seller, which I gave to them when I picked up the car. It wasn't really a big deal for my bank, they deal with it all the time. You will need the sellers account info for your bank. They will call and get the payoff amount, and do the rest for you. Good luck.
