Default Homelink install wiring question

I'm getting ready to do the homelink install in a new sun visor. Unfortunately, my car is in storage 45 miles from here, so I have no way to check polarity. The visor has red and white wires at the connector, my question is which is the power and which is the ground? I can trace the correct connections from there.

TIA and Merry Christmas, Jake

My wiring diagram shows the positive (hot) wire to the mirror is orange, and the ground wire is black. Usually the RED is positive and White is neutral (ground) in most wiring color systems.

Thanks. The Digitalcorvette writeup shows red/white leads, Stickman's writeup shows black wires and yours orange and black. I'm a little confused. I wish the car were handy to actually test it.

I can understand that you're confused, I would be too !!

The colors I listed (Orange and Black) are based on the wiring diagram from my 2001 Service Manual. These would be the wires coming from the fuse block to the visor. Inside the visor, I can't guarantee what colors are used.

Generally, in a red/white color scheme, red is HOT and white is GROUND.

A $10 voltmeter or test light might be the answer.

When I opened up the visor, the wires were red and white. The red was the switched lead (assumed hot) and thats how I wired it up. The install went pretty fast. I'll get it sewed up this week. As mentioned, the car is in storage 45 miles away, so it'll be spring before I find out if it works. Thanks for the information.

I just did mine last week and the red wire turned out to be the hot. I was following the directions on Digital Corvette, and did mine by his colors, and it would not work. took me several tries to find out it was hooked up backward. Had to go to the car and test the wires there to find it out. so I had to go just backwards of his. Good luck on yours. Jack

if you look at the wiring in the visor, you'll see one of the two wires goes to a rivit at the vanity lamp. That should be the ground. I ignored the wire colors because I've of heard several different colors and mine did not match my shop manual which means we don't really know which wire is hot unless we physically measure it with a voltmeter (the safest method). I assume this is because GM gets their visors from several different vendors that don't always use the same wire colors.

I didn't notice a rivet. The red wire went to the switch then to the light bulb and to the other light bulb and returned to the plug as white. I'm thinking there were a lot of varieties from different manufactures. We'll see if it works when i get back home after the holidays.
