I have a 67 RS/SS with a built 396 4sp, 308 gears. The engine was never on a dyno, nor the car, but it should be good for around 450+hp at the crank. Granted not 550, but there is NO Way, it would keep up with my H/C Z. If I were to use spray(100 wet shot), well...you know !!
your comparing apples and oranges yes z can beat most cars on the street but dont think you can't be beat..
ok I'm going to sound like a smuck but my from a dead stop my money would be on the camaro.... the reason I say this I own a 67 camaro [it looks stock expt cowl ind hood] weighs 2800lbs that runs 10.30 on the motor 9.71 on spray..back in the day i would put a hurting on mustang, camaro, and vette owners...
No stock 'vette, camaro, GTO or whatever from back in the day can beat modern C5/C6. I'm talking big block whatever COPO LS whatever 88's. The fastest of the old muscle were running 13's.
You just never know with those older muscle cars. My 74 Pontiac SD-455 )4150 lbs with driver) has run 11.40's on the motor and 10.20's at 154 on a 2 stage 450 shot of nitrous. Its no freeway top end slouch either.
a Trans Am guy... not so many of us out there.
I had that motor in my 70 GTO convertible. Was a pretty respectable ride in a very heavy car. Wish I had that car to sell now....

Speaking of GTO's, I watched on Speed the other night a test of the greatest muscle cars, and one was a 68 goat, it had some sort of dealer upgrade like the Baldwin or Yenko Camaros/Novas did, and the GTO ran a 13.0x in the 1/4 on original style tires, spinning heavily. My fathers 65 gto ran consistent 12.7-12.8 with just slicks and cutouts!!

2005 Corvette 6 Speed
0 to 60 4.1 Sec.
1/4 Mile 12.6 @ 114 MPH (6 Spd. Z51)
Top Speed 180 MPH +
Base Car Acceleration is better than the Legendary ZR1
It nearly matches the Z06

Not quite Ford Thunderbolt Specs
Not a fair comparison. The Ford Thunderbolt, Ford Cammers, Dodge Ramchargers, Hemi Darts, and Hemi Barracudas were not street legal cars. They were sold as drag racers only and in the case of the Ford Thunderbolt were only made available to big-name drag racers that Ford knew would show the company in its best light. By this logic we should include a C6R.
Now there was a well balanced car. I think Gas Ronda (Thunderbolt racer back in the day), said the front end flexed so much, he never new which way the car was going to go when the wheels touched down after the launch. From How stuff works: "As Hot Rod warned, the T-Bolt is not suitable for driving to and from the strip, let alone on the street in everyday use". I've got a pretty good idea of old muscle cars capability, I've owned a '70 454/4spd/3.36geared Corvette for the last twenty years. I agree, the Z06 can be beat, but I doubt the guy had an actual 550hp Camaro, the traction, and the ability.

On crappy tires! Give the old car some new style tires or drag radials and it will be a different story.

Those crappy tires are used for entirely too many excuses. Popular Mechanics did a head-to-head earlier this year of several vintage muscle cars with modern rubber. The best was a 1970 SS454 Chevelle which, as I recall, ran about a 13.3 second ET. It was rated by the factory with 450 HP.
