Default '01 Z06 MAF Question

I am looking for some input as to what I should do with the stock MAF. I know that in 2002 GM de-screened the MAF from the factory. Should I remove the screen from the stock unit, buy an aftermarket MAF, or leave it alone? Is there anything to be improved upon in this area so I might see some gains? I would like to maximize the efficienny of the intake side of things before I move to the exhaust side. I plan on getting a CAI and am leaning towards the Honker.

Aftermarket units are a waste of money. Just descreen it.

The 02-04Z MAF's aren't as accurate as the screened one's, even more so after adding a CAI. That's why GM only had the unscreened MAF's for them 3 yrs. These MAF's are good for a lot of HP and the screen does not restrict the air at all.

Cold Air Intake. (draws in cooler, denser air from outside the engine compartment) Usually worth about 10-20 horsepower depending on supporting mods.

Very true, although descreening is not out of the realm of adjustability with a good tune. There is a notable increase in flow rate, in some rpm ranges up to a 25% increase, which lends itself to increased cylinder charge, and thus power production (assuming fuel ratios are maintained).

If you plan on doing minor mods, it will push the engine lean, but well within the PCM's adaptability, otherwise tuning is the best way to actualize the gains from it. When broken down at a per event level, the descreened unit "is" less consistent, but over the thousands of samples during a driving session, the result is not as out of whack as believed.

Well you can think of it this way. GM found upon increasing the power for '02 that the screen was in fact a restriction to meeting the new HP goals. If your stock no real gain will be had. If your modding and gaining cfm capability in the upper rpm range, dump it. I took mine out of my '97 coupe and compressed it in a vise, it was a larger mass that I thought and a restriction to performance with out a shadow of doubt. Tuning is the best scenerio when removing and/or going to a CAI for the fullest benifits.
