Niki, you labeled the question correctly when you said "Physics". I work at a college that offers a degree in sound technology (recording studio stuff). One of the courses our students take is "physics of sound". It has to do with all sorts of technical variables, like sound wave length, pipe size, length, type of material, etc. Just think of all the different types of musical horns and how they change the sounds by altering the length or placing holes along the pipe or placing resonance chambers. It's an interesting question, but there is probably not a simple answer-too many variables.
I like listening to all the sound clips on the internet on Vette exhaust systems. I chose B & B PRTs. They burble and gurgle when I want. They sound beautiful under WOT, but do not drone at cruising speed.
