I always buy a carfax when buying used just got one the other day for my daughter but I know of a person who was in an accident (with injuries }police report and local paint shop invovled and ran a carfax ten months later and guess what nothing found I do think they are a piece of mind but not fool proof

 

I was told that the only thing that shows up on there is IF the car was a stolen/recovery or a "salvage" title. Other than that, the mileage report is about the only thing useful on there.

 

Wifes got caught in roadway with water that flooded interior and engine sucked it up and basically had to replace engine and lots of electrical stuff. Out of curiosity ran a carfax on vette I bought and since got anther free one checked to see if it showed up on wifes car and nothing. All work was done at the dealer a year or so before checking.

WHAT DO I GET IF I REMAIN IN THE SETTLEMENT?
Class Members who remain in the settlement can claim a Voucher good for $20.00 off a vehicle inspection by a designated third party within six months of final approval of the settlement, a Voucher good for two free Carfax Vehicle History Reports from Carfax within one year of final approval of the settlement, a Voucher for one free Carfax Vehicle History Report from Carfax within two years of final approval of the settlement, or a Voucher for 50% off an unlimited number of Carfax Vehicle History Reports (for personal, not commercial use) over 30 consecutive days within three years of final approval of the settlement.* The Court will also order Carfax to make certain changes in its disclosures and contracting process with customers.

I had a car that after some dealer investigation showed to be bought/sold 12 different times all across the country. It also had been in approx 4 different wrecks that we could tell from when I had it in the body shop after wrecking it. CarFax didn't show anything...

My wife had bought a used car with very low mileage for her mom several years ago from a dealership that said the car was never leased, and was traded in because the previous owner wanted a different model sedan. We bought a CarFax report on the car and nothing showed up other than the original purchase and the sale to the dealership that had the car.

About a year later, I had a buddy who had the 30 day unlimited CarFax "package" and was running all my cars through just to see what the reports stated. The used car that my wife had bought now showed up as having been leased, wrecked once, and with have a 25K odometer rollback! We were both shocked, and the number of times the car had been in for service under the extended warranty started making more sense. Since her mom really liked the car and we didn't really want to spend the money on another car at the time, we just lived with it.

Another couple of years later, we finally decided to take the car from her because she had series of accidents, it had been stolen and recovered once, and we had determined that she was no longer capable of driving a large sedan safely. When we went to sell the car, we decided to run another CarFax report (had another friend with the 30 days) and the car came up completely clean again!

Ever since that experience, I don't trust any CarFax reports and I'm now glad to see that there is a class action suit against them!
