I'm new, just picked up a 2000 pewter hardtop & loving it. Slight tapping on top of engine, not always there, should I be concerned?
Thanks Keldane

I also just bought a 2000 pewter. mines a coupe w/ 91k miles, and has some tapping sounds at lower RPM. i asked some of my LS1 buds and they said it was pretty normal. The car pulls real strong in all gears through the RPM band and sounds good doing it once I give it a little gas.

There's a little piston slap at start up on cool mornings but the noise should go away after a brief warm-up. You can do a search and see where this is not uncommon.

I've got what I would call a "ticking" that I'm sure is valvetrain related and varies with RPM. I had a local tuner and also the vette guy from the local dealership come on a ride with me. They both heard it a little but said to not worry about it right now. I just bought some exhaust to help cover it up and get it off my mind

Thanks for the comforting news. I'll change the oil and forget about the tapping sound.

If the tapping is there when its cold, then stops within seconds or a minute, then you have an issue where the lifter is bleeding down when cold. Simply put, means the lifter(s) wore out. This doesn't happen till you get up near 200K miles so I wouldn't worry just yet. The fix is simple, remove the heads and replace the lifters, but you're looking at 1.5 days to get it apart (taking your time) and 2 days to put it back together, assuming you have all the new parts there ready to go. Do I know what I'm talking about??? Yep, did it myself on my '99. The hardest thing to remove is the power steering pump pulley and its the hardest thing to put back on...2 hours each way.

Default Tap, tap, tap

They all (at least anyone I've ever heard) tap. I almost didn't buy mine until the dealer started several other C5's on his lot and they joined the choir! Forget it, enjoy the Vette!! Good luck, Ron

I don't know how it sounds outside when I'm driving, but I sure hear it in the car until it's warmed up. Comes with the package!!
