Im thinking about getting a Garmin Nuvi. Just curious if they come preinstalled with all the maps you need or do you have to purchase/download maps? If so how much does that run?
I have a Garmin 2720, but I imagine the Nuvi is the same. Mine came with the entire US preloaded, and a software package, Mapsoure, to add more detailed maps of various regions. Even without the additions, it was pretty complete.

comes with maps - updates are via the computer. Just plug it in and it will get any updates you want.
Love my Nuvi. Had mine for aobut 7 months now and drove alot with it with no problems well one. In Canada it thought that a ramp was still open but it was closed so I had to hit the detour feature so it would find me a new way....
My understanding then is that they come with general maps of the entire US but if you want a more detailed maps of a particular area you need to download that.
So if I wanted to take a trip from CA to Kansas City and wanted to be able to get around in Kansas City that I would need to download a map of that area?

Do they charge you for the more detailed map?
I think the maps are detailed for North America. I never had a problem driving around NYC (or walking with it).
I believe the detail maps are for outside North america....

Tomtom just released a brand new map update in december that's free with their 510, 910, and ONE models. I've been using a TT ONE and really like it and it has detailed maps of the entire country. The new update that I haven't installed yet is suppose to have seamless maps of the whole country plus Canada, etc... I've been really happy with the ONE and I bet you can find some good after christmas sales for one.
My Garmin C340 has street level detail for all the U.S. and Canada preloaded. I'm sure the Nuvi is the same or better. Mine will automatically update when hooked up to my computer. There is a Garmin utility you have to download for this.
I have had a Garmin Streetpilot 2610 for 4 years now and while it was set up with general information for the entire US, I had to load specific maps from City Navigator to detail certain areas of the country I wanted to travel through or to. I purchased an updated City Navigator CD for $75 about 6 months ago, and was not pleased to learn that some areas in my hometown of Indy that were developed 7 years ago still do not exist in the new CD. Sooooooo.............. I bought a new (not reconditioned) Tom Tom GO 510 on eBay last Saturday for $399, received it Wednesday morning, and am extremely pleased with it so far. All of the US and Canada is preloaded and includes the detailed information for all of North America. The 3D view and color is a nice change over the Garmin I have as well. I highly recommend the Tom Tom.
