Default Spark plug wire touching header.

My spark plug wire is touching my header. Will that cause a problem?
With the plug wire going bad or what?

thanks

Will probably burn a hole in the wire and short out - killing the cylinder.
Or will burn it in half.

Keep the wires away from the headers.

This was pretty common in my high school days. You could open the hood on the car at night and see sparks jumping from the wire to something metal.

I have the same problem, With one or two wires.
Solution?= Im not sure yet, But I have some heat wrap stuff (cloth like material) I cut a peice of and placed between wire and header, temporary until i look for something better.

I also had this problem with cylinder number 7. ( the back plug wire on the driverside).
I used a spark plug wire sleeve and slipped that over and no problems since.

The hot header pipe will burn though the spark plug wire's insulation. Not a good thing for keeping your engine running smooth.

There is a product out there called "Cool Sox" which is an asbestos or some type of heat resistant material that goes over the spark plug wire like a sock, and is supposed to help guard the spark plug wires - I notice a little marking on my plug wires after 800 miles, so I'm going to install the Cool Sox as part of my head / cam project

I have the equivalent 2000 deg. F Fire Sleeves from Taylor along with the 10.4 mm Taylor Thundervolt wires that have a smaller boot to avoid touching the primaries. Got mine at Thunderracing.com.

Was this the result of a bad repair? Or maybe a mod that didn't fit? I may be new to the world of Corvettes, but I'm having a hard time believing BG built it that way.

I have the cool socks and also reused the GM aluminum boots to further protect my plug wires. I hear that the tube on the LG most forward tube on the passenger side has it fair share of burning wires. Hope you get it worked out, because it will blow the connectivity of the wire and create a very rough running car, because you are not running on all eight cylinders.

Very common, a set of cooling socks will work, but make sure you don't get the ones that only reflect 500 degrees, there is a set that reflects 1500 plus degrees. I know that WEST COAST CORVETTEs sell thems. You could try the boot shields that were on the stock set (if you know what I am talking about) and if it is still touching take a zip tie and tighten just enough to lift it away from the pipe.

Good luck.

The factory provides heat shields on the stock wires. It's when custom headers and wires are installed, that it can become a problem.

I bought the semi-rigid hi-temp insulators from Summit instead of the cool sox. They allow you to form the shape to keep the wires where ever you want them. The cool sox can't do this.
