I have a pretty bad star in my windshield and want to get it replaced before I tint it. I've called around to several places to get prices and they all say that the "molding" will cost more than the glass itself. What should I do? Any past experiences guys?
Tinting your windshield is illegal in every place that I've ever heard of. Oh yeah, and check with your insurance company. Mine will replace the windshield every three years at no cost to me.
Does the car have a Head-Up display? I'm told that those windshields are very expensive. Like around 1,400 bucks so it's hard to believe that the "molding" would be more than that. Have not heard of this before.
I had mine replaced for 270.00 at a local shop, stay away from the big name installers. the cheapest i was quoted from the big boys was about 650.00. btw, if the installer knows what he is doing he can reuse the rubber if its not chewed up too bad.

Just had my glass replaced for free (courtes of insurance company). My policy includes free glass replacement (pretty common in arizona it seems).
Unfortunately the new weather stripping around the window they put on didn't fit properly/seat right, and now i have tons of wind noise. I called to bitch about it, but they wanted to send the same guys out who orgiinally did it. After they also scuffed up my paint on the passenger side door i didn't want to give htem a second chance and told them to forget about it. Wasn't much i could do. So if insurance is paying for it go with a large reputable shop who will take care of you.

Windshield weatherstrip and side reveal moldings are removable and reusable if removed with care by someone who knows where all the screws and attaching hardware is located.
Glass shops generally quote the "molding" so they are covered if the "technican" screws up.
The Z06/FRC windshield is the least expensive C5 windshield and is the same as the HUD convertible windshield.
The Z06/FRC glass is thinner for weight savings and utilized with HUD for optical purposes.
The National Auto Glass Specifications [NAGS] part number is DW01430GBN with a List price $239.85 for the Z06/FRC/HUD Conv.
A discount off NAGS price should be expected. Labor and Windshield urethane kit would be additional.
If you remove and install your own moldings and trim, the labor charge should only be $40-$50 to cut the glass out and set the new glass.
Windshield urethane kit should be no more than $20.
First install was horrible, scratched w/s also tons of specs in it in the pm sun. Also they tore apart the triangle part of the side panels and glued them back on, and used the old weatherstrip but charged for a new one.
Took a couple months to resolve it but they finally got all new parts, new w/s, new weatherstrip, new inside upper and side garnish moldings (they damaged the originals), and new side retainers (parts with black triangle part).
They sent the shop manager and an experienced vette guy along with.
You want a new weatherstrip installed. It comes with peel off sticky on each corner and end and doesn't require being glued in. If it is reused then they have to glue it down and it just doesn't sit back in right the way a new one does sans glue.
The outside strip or side retainers with triangle part comes off as a whole unit. I think they were held on with about 5-6 screws some phillips- some torex. Don't let them tell you that triangle part does have to come apart. It does not.
If you have a HUD it requires a Shaded HUD w/s.
These guys had to first clean all the mess up the first characters left then do the job right. There is a GM primer that is dabbed on any scratched or showing metal in the retainer. Make sure they do that otherwise it could corrode.
Make sure they cover the dash pad so if glass breaks nothing gets in the ducts.
Price was about 650. for the HUD w/s and just shy of 400. for the weatherstrip. (There are places to get the GM w/s for cheaper.)
I install windshields for a living and can tell you this. The Corvette windshield is one the hardest to install. Also the molding usuallis glued on with the glass so yes it is required to do the job correctly. The convertibles are worse as they require the seal across the top to be replaced (also glued on)
Get a technician that has done these before and knows what they are doing.
