You don't HAVE to use your original tire pressure sensors, but you can. Since your car is a '99, you may want to consider replacing them since the batteries are coming close to the end of their life span. I replaced my sensors on my 2000 even though they worked fine because I did not want to take the chance of getting my new wheels scratched from having to dismount the tire for a dead sensor. Check the for sale section, someone is rebuilding them things and selling them at a fraction of the cost of new ones - '97-'00 models cost much much more than those of '01-'04.

You don't have to use the sensors, but if you don't, you will have to clear the message from the DIC every time you start the car. The sensors are a safety feature, no real reason not to use the sensors. I too would recommend replacing them if they are the original ones - they have to be close to the end of their life span.
