Default Dexcool change

Other than draining the old Dexcool and refilling with a 50/50 mix of distilled water and Dexcool, does anyone use any additives when refilling (other than WaterWetter which is made for use with only water). If you do use an additive, what do you use. Thanks.

Nope, that is what I do - 50/50 mix of water and dexcool.

I wouldn't use any additives.

I'd rather use the dexcool "premix" so I don't have to fool with the distilled water.

I usually drain the radiator and then refill with clear water and run the engine (without radiator cap) until the thermostat opens and flushes the water through the motor and heater. After a couple of minutes of running with the thermo open I stop and drain the radiator again. This usually gets some more of the old antifreeze out. I do this a couple of times until the discharge is clear of all the old coolant. Then I put the correct amount of DexCool in and top off with water and burp the system as needed.

Water Wetter works best for racing applications with straight water, but it is fine to use in a DexCool mix. On the bottle they recommend at least 15% coolant mix for street applications. I did mine last weekend, and put in one bottle along with about 25%/75% DexCool/distilled.

BTW- If you buy the premix, you're paying an awful lot for the 50% water.

That's what I did. Althought I did it a couple times before the water was coming out clear....

Several technicians told me not to power flush; their facilities had a machine that did the power flushing and a few places had something like a fire hose to power flush the system. Every dealer's service department, except one, told me that they would just drain & refill, without additives. One dealer did try and sell me additives.

On Dexcool, I read of the numerous pending lawsuits against GM...something about Dexcool gumming up the works. I did read that one of GM's responses on Dexcool was to change it more often than every 5 years/100K miles.

Based on the pending lawsuits against GM and from what GM has stated, Dexcool should be changed more often than every 5yrs/100K miles. I think GM suggested changing your Dexcool every 3 years.

I had mine power flushed at a dealership last fall, probably the first time it was ever done to the 98. They used a machine to do the flushing as I watched.

I don't know about Ford. I was told that power flushing can disrupt the seals; power flushing goes everywhere your coolant goes---draining and refilling does not. By the way, top sellers do not mean top service departments. Another forum member steered me to an excellent dealer service department. I told the member that I was surprised because they were pretty crappy when I tried to buy a Z06; he had the same problem and stated that their service department is entirely different.
