I have searched a bit but all I found was "they are fast or can be fast in the right hands".
currently own a evo, and love the car. It is very rewarding to drive aggressively and extreamly driver friendly. I am considering selling it in order to get a c5 Z06, but the idea of rwd with all that power kinda scares me. I would be doing some track days and autox in it but thats not what worries me. It spirited back roads driving. I have driven one before but obviously wasnt able to push it towards its limits. Is it something thats going to bite me in the **** and should I look somewhere else like towards a e46 m3, or 911, or are they fairly forgiving?
If youe Evo is AWD I personally think you will be best adjusted to the Porsche 911. Don't get me wrong, I am a proud Z owner and wouldn't have it any other way, but I seriously considered the 911 (and test drove many) before buying the Vette. Short and sweet, the Vette is raw and in your face powerful backed by great handling. The 911 is more finess with quick feet, and suction cup feel through the corners. Even the RWD 911'a I drove hafelt like AWD vehicles. My 2 cents for an Evo man.
The Z06 can be very civilized/user friendly when you want it to be.The last couple of days I had to take it to work and I was driving easy and smooth. In a combo of city and freeway driving I got 23mpg..
It idles smooth and has all the creature comforts I`ll ever need.It is a very involved driving experiance and sometimes you have to realize its potential and be cautious.
All in all it is the greatest car Ive ever had and I dont want or need a faster car or better car.Its a jewel.
If you can have two vehicles, which it sounds like you can, go with the Z. I have owned both an E36 M3 and a Z. The M3 is a better daily driver and handles extremely well especially with the readily available suspension upgrades. They do very well on the track and you can have a lot of fun, but it is 160 horses down on the Z. On the track at every apex you can floor the M3 and not get into trouble. With the Z you have to be a lot more careful unless you leave traction control on. I would not mind having both but when I had to choose I picked the Z.
The Z06 is a better all around car IMHO than the other cars you talk about. My wife has an M3 and it doesn't do for me what the Z06 does. The Z06 can be put out of control like any other car but if you keep the Traction control on you would have to do some pretty stupid manuvering to loose it. At the track the Instructors allways say that if you are on the track and a Z06 comes up on you, don't be stupid just give him a point by, he has a production race car and not much that is stock is gonna beat it. Good luck with your decision.

As far as raw performance, I agree that the z is superior to the M3 but the M3 is a very sexy car and I feel that the interior is miles ahead of the Z.

If you're worried about a car that can bite you in the corners, stay away from the 911!
Also, sounds like what you really want is an M3. I autox with the local BMW group, and while the M3s are stellar machines, when one breaks the bills can be stout. Surprisingly, many parts on the Vette are common with other GM/Chevy vehicles. You'll also find M3 mods are pretty pricey, as well.
A Honda NSX is the car for you!
(okay in the US it's called Acura!)
Fast, User Friendly, Great looks, Has a boot! great MPG (for a sports car).
Yeah the nsx is a nice ride but a little costly for what it is. For the price of a decent milage nsx I could get a 600+hp supra, or a Z06 with low miles and a warrenty.
Steve, your killin us maybe you need to re-think this whole thing. You say you want low end, high end, you want to autox, you want something sexy, nice interior, and your afraid of raw power to the rear....
You've mentioned the M3, 911 and Supra more than once. sounds like you want either an M3, supra or a 911/996 (in that order). Why not spend a few days/week with each one and see what you like best.. Good luck buddy.

I hear where your coming from, and the funny thing is that when I posted on other boards they said the same general thing other then it was more like. " it seems like you want a z06 or a _ ?"
I think I am just looking for someone to really persuade me to make my mind up on just one, instead of going back and forth between what I want.
The M3 will make you seem rich. The Porsche will make you seem like you really need girls. The Z06 will make you s*** your pants. End of story
I just recently switched back to cars from sports bikes so all of the above seem rather tame compared to a new liter bike. I am not at all considering the 911 anymore. Its either a Z,m3,supra, or FD 7
Which sound do you like better? American muscle or Euro high revving whine?
There is your deciding factor right there.
I wish it was that easy. I love them both. I think the deciding factor is going to be what I find a good deal on that screams my name at the time. Everything thats on the market right now most likely wont be at the end of next month. As we stand right now though I would love to own this Z http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/car/269297624.html
