Default centercaps question

i've had the same centercaps on my car forever. i think i had the wheels, repro chrome y2k wheels, put on about 6-7 yrs ago. they never, ever popped off.

since it got cooler, i've done runs closer together at autocross, and with the brakes not cooling as much, the centercaps on the front actually melted and fell off!

i thought, no biggie...i have a full new set at home. since i've put them on, THREE have popped off on the road.

the ones i had for years have the c5 emblem painted on (in red and black) in the center. the new ones have the emblem etched into the cap, but not painted. the new ones were still in the GM bags.

my question is....are the repro wheels slightly different so that i need a non-GM centercap? if so, where do i get them?

i called a corvette aftermarket place here in tampa and the girl said that the corvette didn't come with chrome wheels from GM until the c6. ummmmm k.

Default Tape

How about using double sided tape to make them stick.

this might work....but i now have two incomplete sets....so if i'm going to buy a new set, i'd prefer to find the ones that fit without tape.

Is it possible that you are not getting enough cooling air to your rotors?

I will let some one else confirm for sure but it is my understanding that the GM caps should fit the reproductions.

Technically, the girl in Tampa is correct. Chrome wheels from GM are offered beginnning with the C6. On the C5, wheel choices were painted or polished aluminum that were clear coated from the factory. Their are companies that will chrome the stock wheels, but they did not come chrome originally from GM.

Yes.

Try House of Wheels, Corvette Garage, TomzWheels, Ecklers, Mid America etc... If you know the wheel manufacturer of your Chrome Repros it would help. Maybe one of the above can tell you where to look for a stamping to help ID the manufacturer.

Put a clear sealer on them to hold them on.
