I've got a black top, also, and I've been tempted to try the spray can upholstery dye. I've tried a light coat of flat black spray paint, but it doesn't seem to do much.

You could use the dye some have used on their carpet to get it black, but you'd have to take the top off the car. You wouldn't want to mess with that stuff while it's on the car due to having to wash off and re-dye 2-3 times.
Most would recommend you get a professional shop in your area to put the top back on and that would run around $400-$500 So if your savy enough to take off the top and put it back on, it might be worth the $600 you'd save by not purchasing a new one.

Thanks guys for all the replies. That price of $600 for the top must be without installation I presume.

I just got through dyeing my carpet and it worked very well. The only thing I was thinking about with your top is that it has some type of water repellant that would probably not allow the dye to penitrate. IMO!
