Painted dash cluster winter project update
A few people have asked me to show what's been done up to now, so here are some pics. In-car views not available til spring! Camera doesn't do justice to Torch Red, but the idea is shown. Parts are loosely assembled for photos:

What's the rest of the interior going to look like?
Thanks guys.
Y2K... I'm using a theme of brushed silver and torch red throughout the car. So far, I have the HVAC dash bezel in silver and a brushed aluminum shifter. I'll do the other common black trim pieces later on. I have to thank you for the speedo idea. It never occurred to me to paint that black area around the gages until I saw your post a few days ago. I primed it then topcoated it last night.
I'm on the fence again whether to go with white face gages, or just leave it the way it is now...it might lose some of the contrast. At any rate, this is a fun project, and I'm doing it with spray cans of paint!
That's gonna really be nice when you get it all back together again.
A question I have is: what prep did you do to the "red part?" When I put my rings on I noticed that this area was really a weird texture.
The inner bezel really needs no prep. Just prime and paint, it will come out smooth and glossy.
It does have a very fine texture to it, and is probably purposely like that to achieve the dull matte finish, so it doesn't reflect the gauges.
For anyone painting this part, you will see some reflections on the upper part of the surround when driving at night, but it's certainly not bad enough to be distracting.

Thanks...I tend to agree with you. I hate to introduce a 4th color. I've eliminated all the white on the car now (front turn signal lens, rear backup lenses)....so my theme is Torch Red, Black, and Silver, or brushed aluminum for the actual metal parts such as my wheels, shift ****, etc. I even have the brushed stainless gas door ready to go on.

Yes, it is nice and glossy now....I am omitting the standard clearcoat step for this reason as well.It will all be protected by the lens anyways.
