The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I just recently had TPIS's put on my car by a very knowledgeable mechanic. I understood from him that the stock cross-over is used as an attempt at smoothing out the exhaust pulses, to eliminate "popping" on deceleration -- but the OPENING through that cross over pipe is NOT the diameter of the pipe you see there, so it's not very effective as an exhaust tuning crossover. An aftermarket x-pipe should "mellow" the tone of the exhaust slightly, WILL eliminate (or cut down significantly) on popping created by the new headers, and could (with some R&D, I'm sure) tune the exhaust pulses in such a way that it helps to flow the exhaust better (by balancing the pulses to "pull" the exhaust out). (Sound right, exhaust-engineer guys?)
Me, I opted not to install an x-pipe with my headers 'cause 1) the additional cost of the piece, and 2) my mechanic said that on this application it would mostly mellow the sounds and cut down on some popping -- neither of which I was (or am) concerned about.
Hope this helps!

the SOTP is amazing and the build quality is like no other long tube I've seen.
