They are attached with two sided tape. Remove as mentioned above, the use something like goo gone or WD-40 to remove any remaining adhesive.

In 99% of the time, no paint damage will occur if done as recommended above...but, if the car has ever been repainted/repaired by a previous owner, you might damage the paint. Someone just last week described the horror of watching a patch of paint come off with the body side moldings.
