Originally I installed the VaraRam and it took me two nights to get it lined up in a reasonable fashion, and that was after some cutting/tweaking to the system. I didn't notice much gain from the system and really didn't like how it looked. Additionally I wasn't crazy about how the filter sealed or the extra stress it put on the radiator supports. The VaraRam does provide true ram-air, but it didn't look to me like the system was designed to utilize the full potential of the idea - and actually required air be delivered all the way from the tip of the nose.
When I took the VaraRam off and installed the Honker I was much happier, giddy if you will... I noticed better throttle response (from the MAF being relocated), a nice growl coming from under the hood, and the engine ran smoother at higher RPM's. This design only requires air to travel approx 1 foot from outside to throttle body, and uses a very large filter to provide maximum air flow.
The honker is the more expensive option at $490 but you can clearly see where the extra money goes when you look at the systems side by side, and can no doubt feel the performance advantage of the Callaway. No worries if you want to try the VaraRam, they have great customer service and I got a full refund on the system even after slight mods.

Damn are you serious ??? 4MPH from that ??!!! Is this the VR-B2 or whatever the new one is called?
Yep.. well I guess I should have said 3 to 4 MPH. I ran 4 runs before Vararam 3 @104 and 1 @105 with a 13.49, 1st time out after install I had 4 runs, all at 107 with a best of 12.98, 2nd time out after install I had 5 runs, all 108 with best of 12.89, all runs with street tires on
The newer Vararams that I have seen in no way match the quality, fit and finish of the Honker. I could never see the point of getting into endless intake wars (like header wars) over which is better. For me though, the Honker was the obvious choice and I have been very happy since installing it.I aso liked the fact the MAF is located next to the throttle body as it is now on the C6, which makes a neat looking system and they say improves throttle response. The filter on the Honker is also a really good one, with a tight fitting seal. The Honker is also the only one I know of that is CARB approved and comes with a sticker, if you have to worry about emissions testing. I don't know about actual dyno's, but going from a Blackwing to the Honker made one heck of a difference, no question about it. As far as the extra money, as the saying goes "If you eat a horse, don't choke on the tail". People spend more money than the difference between these two intakes on stupid little doodads to stick all over their car. That being said , which ever one you go with should make a substancial improvement in performance.

i went with vr-2 and could not be happier ,,it does take about 3-4 to install..but well worth the time ..no matter which 1 you choose it will be an improvement over stock
I'm debating between honker and halltech SSM. The only thing that holds me back from getting a honker is all these hydrolock stories I heard about bottom feeder intakes, because I drive my car daily. Can anyone with honker verify how low it sits on the radiator shroud? Is it afe to drive in the rain?

No worries about the hydrolock here - I live in Seattle and would be suprised if anybody in the US is denied the sun and inundated with rain as much as we are. Had spots where I was hyrdoplaning for hunderdds of feet at 80mph and never got a drop into the intake...
