I just bought a front license plate filler. It came flat black, so get it painted. Can i just walk into a body shop with the plate and they will be able to match it to my car? Do i need to write down a color code that is printed somewhere on my car, and if so where is it?

Look inside your glove compartment for almost all option codes for your car, then search on the forum search for the options listings to find out tons of info on your car
You can go to a paint supply shop (the ones that paint shops buy paint from) and they can make up a small spray can and a small spray can of clear. A very easy DIY, if you are so inclinded. If it's not available locally, This is just one link online... look around... Click Here
This was my very first time ever to use auto paint on a project sub box I built a few months back. 1 primer coat, 3 coats base color, 3 clear. Let it dry. Walah!
.
You could even do your small job with a $15 air brush kit. Just get a couple of ounces of base color and clear....
That would be a very small job for a paint shop, but would still involve the time to mix paint, spray it, wait, then clear it then clean up the mess. My guess would be around $100 min.
