I've had my C5 1 week and it needed to be towed to the local dealership for the steering column locking-up. The service advisor looked up my VIN and said the recall had been performed and it would cost me $$$$ to fix. He has not given me an estimate yet - told me I'd get the bad news Monday. This does not make me happy!
No, I did... I've just never had a car towed away after owning it a week. regarding what I've read, it would appear they should not charge me for the repair. Even though the recall was performed, there seems to be a secondary recall that removes the column lock plate from the steering column. It is safe to assume this has not been done!
i have had the latest and greatest done and still get the pull key blink every so often. have figured out that it will happen if it is rainin g and the key gets any moisture on it. and if i turn it on, then right back off, then jump back in to turn it on and drive away. steering does not lock but the "pull key and wait " starts to cause grief and will shut the car down on ya when you go to leave.
If the newest of recalls hasnt been done...they cant charge you a damn thing...dont let the "stealership" scam you out of something they should be fixing for free....

GM won't charge you for the repair or tow, the have a service message on it that the dealership can look up. They will have to call a local zone rep to get authorization. I recieved a letter from gm telling me that they would cover this until 2008
I appreciate all of the info on the subject. Do some cars seem to be problematic with this and others not? Two of my friends, one with a 03 and the other with a 04, have never even heard of the problem!

hdjay,
Hang in there !!, you will get past the column lock issue and in time grow to love the car. C5's kick a$$. your's looks nice, they are not perfect but you will never find a car with the C5's capability that's easier to live with.
The Column Lock on the C5 is the most notorious problem the car has. You shold not have to pay anything, like a few other posted, there is a service memo out there the Dealer should have access to. Don't pay them a DIME!
I'm guessing your car didn't it come with at least a 90day warranty?? Just a Taillight warranty?? These are the typical type of Stealerships that give Dealerships a bad name. 1 Week??? Its not likes it a wear n tear item where you caused it by burning the tires off, its a frigging recall item that I'm sure they're well aware of. If you wind up paying for this, make sure they buy you flowers and call you in the morning.
Ok, I've read the column lock threads and sticky. My car had the first recall done before I bought it. Can the CLB still be installed? Seems like I read that it could not be installed after the new harness was installed by the recall. Anyway, if I can add the CLB and remove the lock plate, won't it still cut the fuel off at 2 miles per hour? Is there a guaranteed fix? Computer fix where it doesn't look for the column lock if the plate is removed?
