Default AN fittings?

How do you figure out what size is a AN fitting is.I know it has a number,But what does that number mean.I've been messing with cars & motorcycles for year's and never knew what the number's mean.Example, -03 AN or -08 AN or -12 AN...........Paul

The number is expressed in 16ths.

So, a size 8 fitting = 8/16", which is 1/2".

4 is 1/4"
6 is 3/8"
16 is 1"

etc etc...

The number is the equivilent of 16th of an inch, ie 04 would be 4/16th or a 1/4" i.d., 08 would be 8/16th or 1/2" i.d. and so on. Be aware though that AN and JIC fittings have a different sealing taper angle, and should not be mixed.

And also, hose size is the measurement of the inner diameter of the hose.

-4 hose has an I.D. of 1/4"
-5 hose has an I.D. of 5/16"
-6 hose has an I.D. of 3/8"
-8 hose has an I.D. of 1/2"
-10 hose has an I.D. of 5/8"
-12 hose has an I.D. of 3/4"
-16 hose has an I.D. of 1"
-20 hose has an I.D. of 1 1/4"

JIC and AN fittings both use a 37* flare, and same thread size, and ARE compatible.

JIC fittings are most common on high pressure hydraulic hose/tube fittings in the industrial world....where AN is mostly automotive/aircraft/military.

There are also 45* flare fittings which are old, but still common in the industrial world. These are NOT compatible with AN or JIC fittings. Flare angle and threads are different.

I was just looking through a Jeg's catolog and it said for a fitting I was looking at "They easily connect to standard 37* AN style adapter fitting's" No clue what that meant,But now I do.Learn something new every day.

JIC = Joint Industry Conference Roughly the industrial equivilent of AN

AN = Army Navy (though some sources say Air Force Navy) Basically a military/aerospace standard.
