Well today felt like spring and that can only mean one thing time to get my ride ready for the summer

I'm interested in getting a tunnel plate but not sure which one - and do I need the more expensive coated model

Hey Bob,

There is a lot of information about tunnel plates out there. Here is what we found in our research and our engineers tell us.

Aluminum has a KSI of 40 to 42 which is 40,000 to 42,000 ft/lbs it only varies between 7 and 10% between 1/16 of an inch and 1/2 of an inch.

In other words we don't feel that thicker is really any better, just heavier...

To answer the question of heat question, you do get heat reduction when you coat the plate, although we found it not cost effective, because the reduction is heat was < 15%

There are lots of great options out there, good luck on your choice, and feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Peace
Chip

I installed an Elite ABS tunnel plate. The plate is 1/4" thick aluminum with ceramic coating and a thermal barrier added. It virtually eliminated the heat from my center console. Was definitely worth the money - about a $150 - which is loose change on these cars.

I have the 1/4" aluminum tunnel plate. No coating.

Cant comment on the heat reduction since it was installed in the fall.

But the effect it had on handling was noticeable. No more bump steer.

I got a heck of a deal on a scratch and dent from cca the other day. I thought I was getting a slightly marred unit that I would have to work a half day on to polish out, but it came and all I had to do was polish off the printing that comes on the raw stock. I checked and he must be sold out of the scratch & dents, but the standard plate is a good buy too. I had an Elite Engineering plate on my 99 and it looked great and reduced heat, but who is going to see it but me. Any of the plates are going to improve handling and reduce the heat transfer, it just depends on your budget and how you want your car to look from the roadkill angle. I have had a good experience with both vendors and both plates installed, fit, and function the same. Just my $.02 Just have fun with it, pamper it and it will pay you back when you you feel the need for speed.

I don't know quite what you mean here, 1000 lb/in^2 = 1 ksi aka 1000 Pounds per in^2. Ft/lbs is a measurement of Torque. which physical property of aluminum are you trying to state?

I did however have to drill holes in it for my O2 wires with my header install. I think the CCA plate already has them cut out.

Elite Engineering Thermal Abs. Made an incredible difference in interior temps (much lower) and stiffened the car too. Great product.

It does. But it didn't line up with the O2 sensor bung on my new LT headers, so the easy fix was just to cut another in the right location. Other than that, I love my CCA plate, reduced heat, and really stiffened up this rattle-trap 'vert. Car also launches straight as an arrow repeatedly with no flex at the track. Thanks again Chip!

Glad you like it

What kind of LT's did you put on? Did they come with extensions? Which hole was it.

Always interested in how to improve our products.

I said "LOVE"!

Dynatech. They got bungs in a weird place (compared to Kook's), but I love them too! Deleted the rears.

Hey, I gotta get some FattMamma's, my buds were installing theirs and they went drill crazy and drilled mine already! Talk at ya in a sec...
