I'm a week out in cold weather from Florida.
I have a 6 speed and in the morning when I start my car I hear some weird fairly loud spinning and what sounds like metal on metal noise from my transmission until it's warmed up...once I drive for about 25 minutes it goes away completely.
Never had this problem before as it was always in FL but here it's in the teens in the morning on the way to work. Is this a problem?
From your post it sounds as though this is occurring since the temps have dropped, I wonder if the trans oil might be a heavy weight and not lubricating properly until the transmission oil temperature rises making the oil flow more freely. It would seem if that were the case that it should not take 25 minutes for it to warm up though. Also if the trans oil level might be low the low temps would probably affect it since there might be less than the proper amount of oil which would delay proper circulation until the transmission oil temperature rises and it expands. Cold weather is hard on mechanical devices. Just a thought.
the oil is completely full and just a few months old...I checked the level a week ago and it poured out when it was on the lift. It does take about 20 minutes for all of the noise to go completely away, the real loud noise goes away in under 10. Today for instance it was 38 when I cranked the car and there was no noise...I have the factory weight in there
I dont drive my car in the winter, but I do start it maybe twice a month just to run, and even when its been in the teens here in Jersey, I have never heard any strange noises. try the tech section, good luck with it!
I have the same issue and (I am a technician) my assumption is that it is a driveshaft bearing, although not sure if front or rear at this point though. Either way for such a small annoyance I'm not pulling the driveshaft out to replace the bearings. Even so, I don't think you can get the bearings separate from a torque tube assembly.......easily. (not from GM at least)

I also notice that sometimes if I push the clutch in it will go away and it stops depending on the level of acceleration as well
I also do have my interior out, I bet that the center piece being in place will quiet it noticeably
I'm having the same problem I'm pretty sure it's the torque tube bearing. At first mine started out kinda like yours it'll go away and come back on, but after a few months of driving now the noise is on constantly and gets louder and louder. Try down shifting around 3-4K RPM with windows up and radio off see if you can hear any spinning/whining noise. Keep me posted.

yup I can hear that noise if I downshift without rev matching.
The trans noise is never an issue unless the temp is 35 or below. Above that I don't hear a sound. Depending on how cold it is out, it'll take a minute or two up to 15 minutes for the noise to completely stop when cold
No big deal IMO, I won't be where I am much longer and this will be a complete non issue in florida
