Tuning your PCM is done with any handheld tuner, regardless if it is via laptops, hypertechs, diablo sport tuners, etc, when you send the written tune with handhelds, it is a PCM tune, because it is writing data to the PCM.
As for HYPERTECH being junk? I disagree, I agree that DIABLO offers more for the buck and it allows you to clear codes, see codes, see real time data and cool things like that, but HYPERTECH isn't junk, it is just not liked here. I have used hypertech and diablo and with great success on both, I prefer the diablo, but I am not cursing the hypertech at all. It is really a choice that is made by the consumer and I don't think the original poster was looking for criticism such as it is junk, you wasted your money, etc, he was looking for useage info and that is MHO.
I can probably find numerous posts on the HYPERTECH, DIABLO and other tuners where they had problems and that is not just going to be limited to CORVETTEs. My buddy bought a HYPERTECH and has been able to do more with it than I thought was possible and HYPERTECH has been extremely upfont with him and very helpful. I am sure he will post up soon, he had class tonight. Lets not discourage the man from using something that he spent money for, but help him use it to the fullest possible exent. If he is not a heavy modder, it will be fine for him. If he uses it and doesn't care for it, than he can tune the car back to stock and sell it. As for "what if it ruins his pcm?" comments, you will never know unless you use it and if the seller tuned it back to stock, it will be fine. If he is concerned he can call hypertech and I am sure they can test it and be sure things are fine.
Sorry this is so long, I just wanted to help out the original poster.

I have one I have used it with great success. I bought it used on the forum and it was for an F-body and not a Vette. I called Hypertech and explained what I did. They had me send in the F-Body unit plus a couple of bucks and gave me a brand new unit. I have had excellant service. I have used to for multiple functions and the unscientific performance measure I used was the length of black marks the car puts down w/TC off, and 0-60 times. Both improved w/ HT tune in car. To each his own but I think that for a basic car they (hand held portables are a good deal). If you have any issues feel free to PM me
If you use it be careful, if the car has had any of the recalls done, the older Hypertechs will not recognize the program and will lock up. Hypertech's response was to purchase a new unit, they would not even reset it. Not what I would call good customer service.
Thanks for the good and bad replies. The guy I bought it from said he set his car back to normal before he sent it to me, so it should work just fine. I did have one a few years ago for a dodge truck I had and it worked great, I too set the truck back to stock and sold the unit to a friend and it worked fine on his truck. For the money I spent, hopefully it will be worth it. I do not want a special tune from a tuner because my car is basically stock, so it would not be worth the money and time to have it done from what I here. If anyone out there has one and has used it on their stock c5, I would like to here from you. Like I said, first hand information is usually the best info out there...

I used one on my 2000 when I first bought it, firmed up the shift points by 50%, adjusted the fans and adjusted the shift speeds and used the tune that came from HP and it DID make a noticeable difference.

Yep, the Hypertech on my 2000 is what got me started on the road to this GodAwful disease that many of us have I have an A4 also and the shift point firmness program led to long tubes, a 900 mile trip to Amityville, Corsa Indys, Vortex Ram Air, Vette Drs. tune and on and on...............
I know the OP is asking about the Hypertech programmer, but does anyone here have any experience with the VHP(Vinci High Performance) handheld I mentioned earlier? I'm seriously considering it and any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
