A 63-year-old man was killed Tuesday after he lost control of his car and drove into a pole in Bohemia, Suffolk County police said.
Samuel D. Hunter, of Bay Shore, was driving his 1999 Corvette north on Lakeland Avenue south of Smithtown Avenue when he veered off the road and slammed into a utility pole about 11 a.m., police said.
Hunter was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The light pole, which was about 3 feet wide, was not damaged, but power was knocked out for a while, said Suffolk County police Det. Sgt. Daniel Molloy. Debris from the car was strewn 50 feet in all directions, he said.
"It just disintegrated," he said.
Because the road was dry and straight and no skid marks were found, police are investigating whether Hunter was distracted, cut off, or had a medical issue that forced him to lose control of the car, Molloy said.
Police are also investigating why, before the accident, the car was pulled over on the side of the road about a half-mile away, Molloy said.
Police are asking that anyone with information call Suffolk County police at 631-854-8552 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
Prayers to his family at this sad time in their life.
We never know how, when, or where God will take us home.
Makes me stop and think, and enjoy life everyday.
Sounds like a medical issue. Mebbe had chest pain and thought he could make it to a doc. Can only speculate. Tragic. Heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the family.
