1st. Maybe 2nd, but I wouldn't go any higher than that. Try 1st and let us know how it works.

See I have the DTE Stage 1 diff w/ 4.10:1 gear ratio. 1st doesn't go up that high, so I use 2nd to cruise at 45-50. Really keeps it in the power band.

lol Yeah - man, if you have the manual, read it. Theres a LOT of good info in your manual about your C5. including it's recommended shift points.
I believe it says for 'best gas mileage' (basically just putting around town) it should be like this:
2nd @ 15
3rd @ 25
4th @ 35
5th @ 45
6th @ 55
But the reality is you can skip gears easily - hell it's even built in w/ CAGS between 15-20mph. The idea is to mope around at ~1600-2000RPMs like VinnyT said.
So at 45-50 I'd be in 5th gear ~ 1600RPMs (assuming 3.42 rear end) and call it good.

Turn down the stereo and listen to the engine. It'll tell you if the gear is too high. If it sounds like it's laboring, downshift.

Yes, and if you drop under 25 mph, put it in reverse and drive backwards. This will save wear and tear on the forward gears.
