In the market for a short throw shifter. I have read many subtitles and all I can come up with is Hurst has a patent adjustable springs and B&M has "the shortest length." Basically from expreince on both which do you prefer and why.
I know a lot of this has to do with driver preference, but outside opinions never hurt.
Thanks - Brandon
I only have used the Hurst, but I like the adjustable feature. The previous owner had it set up VERY stiff, and I was able to relax the throw a little bit. The operation of it reminds me of a bolt action rifle. Very mechanical feel and it rattles slightly only at certain RPMs. Usually I don't notice. The 2-3 shift is very very nice
i have the b&m shifter and i can agree with the above that it has a very notchy mechanical feel but it does not rattle at any speed or any gear like i have heard some hurst shifters doing. Shifts are very precise. I have never missed a shift with this shifter. I highly recommend it but honestly have never tried out the hurst.
Also look into the MTI 6 shooter... heard alot of good things about it.

Great description of the feel IMO. I like it, and I left the medium springs in mine. I have heard folks to the soft ones and loved it.
Bluff I have not driven a B&M, but I love love my hurst, and it taste like chicken!!!

Ive had both and if you can follow directions and do the adjustments then its the "Hurst" for sure and If you have "rattling" ever, its not the shifter,.... maybe the instal missed somthing, or the old,...."lose nut at the controles"!!

There might be a lose nut behind your steering wheel.
I can assure you my hurst was installed properly and everything torqued to spec. Rattled like a crazy. Had to wrap it in rubber hose and buy a specific **** to shut it up. Didn't re-tighten a single bolt. If yours didn't rattled from the factory consider yourself lucky. To everyone else in the market for a hurst... beware of the rattle.
Some rambling of mine about shifters and rattling, pulled from another thread about the MTI shifter:
I think I can provide some "theoretical" rhyme & reason for the rattle, and some ideas on how to overall improve the shifting experience....
I would be willing to bet the majority of rattles are coming from Z06 drivers, and most of the coupe drivers are satisfied with the quietness of the MTI shifter.
The Z06 shift boxes are mounted to the torque tube via solid bushings, and the coupe shift boxes are mounted via rubber bushings. For this reason less of the vibration is transferred to the shifter on the couple models and they will remain quieter.
My Z06 was silent stock, loud as hell with the B&M (I sold it to my buddy with a coupe and he loves it, perfectly quiet), and somewhere between with the MTI. I have adjusted the shift box positioning and linkage many times with slightly better/worse results in both shift smoothness and noise reduction - the perfect placement still eludes me though.
I thought the rattle was coming from the stock shift ****, but after replacing with an F-body shift **** the rattle remains. The severity of the rattle can also be reduced/increased by adding pressure to the shifter at higher RPM's, but this is the last thing you want to be thinking about when playing in the twisties or chewing up some rice...
One thing that I did to substiantially quiet noise coming from the torque tube and rattle through the shifter was use dynomat. I added a layer to the upper and lower side of the rubber cover that goes over the shifter, added a few wraps to the shaft of the shifter, and then also insulated the back side of the entire center console. This greatly reduced squeeks/rattles coming from the shifter and center console, also it reduced the amount of noise coming through the center console area. This only added 5lbs of weight at the very most, so dont get in a huff about making the car heavier.
Realistically the the shifting improvement from stock after adding: MTI 6-shooter, anti-venom, AMSOil ATF, F-Body shift ****, and dynomat made it a whole new car.
