Default Help me choose a cam!

I've been spending a LOT of time on CF and ls1tech trying to decide which cam is best for ME. I have a daily driver '03 Z06 with 1-3/4" Dynatech Longtubes and a Vararam CAI. I daily drive my car in stop and go traffic here in Houston for a total of about an hour a day. Below is a spreadsheet I made up with a bunch of different options, some fairly small, some a bit too big and everything in between just about. All durations and lifts are XER lobes from Comp Cams. I chose the XER lobe to stay under .600 lift to increase the longevity of my springs/valvetrain.

All highlighted numbers are cams that fall in between my conditional formatting. DCR: between 8.4:1-8.6:1, Overlap:0-5° and IVC 46° or less. IB is the difference between the IVO and EVC to see how much intake bias there is (how relevant that is, I'm not sure ). All values are calculated with the PianoProdigy spreadsheet found on ls1tech, with values provided for the LS1/LS6.

I hope ya'll will take a look at what I have, please comment on my parameters for a daily driver, recommend something else, criticize, everything! I would like to go as big as possible (of course) without hating my car.

Thanks!

Well FWIW I'm running a G5-X2 on a 114. Car drives fine in stop/go traffic w/ a nice lope. I did swap my stingers for some Corsa Indys to remove the excessive drone the cam created.

The cam is a 232/240 .595/.608 114.... so it's big, but not crazy big. I accomplished my goal... a moderate cam, nice lope, that was still truly daily drivable.

Car pulls like mad over 3500 rpms. Under 3000 it lost 20 ft/lbs, but the high end more than makes up for it.

Better to figure out how big a cam you want first and go once size bigger. Streetability is ALL in the tune...

I have MTI and HPE here locally unless I want to make a 4 hr drive up to LGM. Will they give me streetability??

I really do have to drive it in terrible traffic. It takes me 45-50 minutes to go 11 miles... I need to be able to let the clutch out in first with hardly any gas and putt along at idle, with the A/C in 100 degree weather.

50 minutes for 11 miles - brutal !!

Go with the cam that Tom (Y2kvert4me) recommended.

Stick with 114 LSA for sure. I recommend the 224/228 .581.588@114..perfect street cam esp for a DD car I wanted a cam that is smooth as hell at idle yet packs a punch at WOT.

Based on your needs... I'd definately stay w/ a smaller cam. My G5-X2 drives great but it'd surge and buck if I tried to let it roll at idle under it's own power. I drive it to work everyday now that my beater truck died on me.

Like Ike said... the 114 LSA will give you a slightly smoother lope and better manners. I went w/ a 114 and it pulls like a banshe from 3500-7000... from 3000-3500 it's like it was before and below 3000 it's a bit softer... dyno shows 20 ft/lbs less torque.

Ok, I'm going to try and narrow it down some:
224/228 .581/.588 112+4
224/228 .581/.588 114+4
226/230 .585/.592 112+4
228/228 .588/.588 112+4
228/232 .588/.595 112+4

Anyone think I should go smaller than a 224/228? Larger than a 228/232?

For your needs I'd go 224/228 114+4.

Here are some recommendations from CF vendors:
228/228 .588/.588 114+4
224/228 114
226/228-112+4 .620"/.586
G5X1
228R 228/228 112+2
Torquer 2 232/234 111+2

Even more reecommendations here (thanks Hammer!):

Out of these choices, I would go with either one of these:

228/232 .588/.595 112+4

I got this exact cam. Very good on a DD. You can get it on a 114 and it should idle a bit smoother. Mine has just a little shake, enough for me to like it.

dbird -- I'm in the exact same boat as you. I'm looking at the MTI cams and trying to figure out what would be best. David at MTI recommended the C2 cam to fit my driving needs - which match yours exactly (heck my Z06 is even EB). I commute from Katy to Greenway (22 mi) in the vette -- but I do double your speed to an avg of a whopping 20mph and spend 1.5-2 hours in the car a day. I need smooth driveability, but also want it to be fairly clear I've got a cam. I'm just concerned the C2 cam might be too small.

I've just bought a blackwing as I don't like the ram air type intakes that pull air from underneath given that I drive it daily and there is often water on the road when it rains. I'm also going to add a set of long tubes with the install of the cam. Since it will be with MTI, it will be Kooks.

I like the comments in this thread as they mirror my thinking - pick what I want and then go one bigger. David commented that the C2 cam was good, but didn't do any one thing particularly well, it was just a well rounded cam. Sounds good and is logical, but not a real good selling point.

I tried to read through your previous thread with all of the comments by the hammer earlier this week, but I ended up confused.

Here are the MTI cams - they don't seem to match the specs people are posting in this thread.

Cam Duration Lift Lobe Separation Intake Exhaust Intake Exhaust
C2 224 224 .581 .581 112
G1 228 232 .588 .575 113
X1 230 227 .591 .571 112
R1 232 236 .575 .578 114
Z1 236 236 .585 .585 112
S1 244 244 .612 .612 112

MTI Stealth Series
Cam Duration Lift Lobe Separation Intake Exhaust Intake Exhaust
Stealth I 220 220 .581 .581 115
Stealth II 224 220 .581 .581 116

I'd love to hear what you end up with. I'm still trying to figure things out.
