Turn Signal & Door Lock Problems
I did the procedure yesterday, and now my turn signals are working again. Love this site and its contributors.
In case you try the chisel/whack it out technique for removing the flasher, be sure to note that the flasher gets punched toward the firewall (AKA front of the car). It looks like the thing could come out the vent area into the passengers cabin, but that is not the case.
Also note that one brave owner just sprayed the heck out of the flasher with plastic-friendly electrical cleaning fluid. After taking the faulty device apart, I can see the merit of that treatment. There are slide contacts inside the flasher which get burned and don't operate properly.
I also tried to fix the pesky intermittent door lock problem by ordering the replacement relays from Digi-Key (love those guys), taking the passenger's door skin off, and R&R the circuit board and relays. Whoever said it was a tough job is mostly right. You definitely need a 35 watt soldering iron, a good set of glasses, and patience. The vacuum stick doesn't do much, nor does a copper wick. What worked for me was using a small, thin knife blade to cut the 5 pins off between the relay and the printed circuit board. Once done, it was easy to grab the remaining pin stub and unsolder it. Then I used the copper wick to clean up the hole and pad. I felt pretty proud of the result – until the next day when the driver’s door lock continued to work sometimes and not others. Any suggestions? Ground issues?
I'll try to post a picture after I find out if my ISP hosts.
