I have to give credit to Choreo's post about soundproofing, when he said that carrying a roll of fiberglass wall insulation home from the store reduced his car's noise, I got thinking.
I cut 3 pieces of 3 1/2 inch thick fiberglass batt insulations to fit in the rear three compartments. I used paper faced with paper up. 6 inch insulation would fit, but I used what I had on-hand.
The results in cutting noise are AMAZING ! This is probably the best and cheapest mod I have done to my car. Those wells must be acting as "speaker enclosures" and amplifying the sounds.
Z06's who don't even have lids on these wells, do this and put wood or cardboard (carpet covered) over them and you will be amazed.

Reason: correct spelling
The tubs in the back are just perfect for resonating, and picking up a ton of road noise. Especially considering their relation to the wheels and exhaust.
What he did was stuff the rear tubs with insulation. Cheap and effective way to do it, though you lose storage space.
If you were to take about 1" thick of foam, and attach it to the bottoms of the storage lids, you could get much the same effect.
OK I must be having a "moment" here. Explain or give me pics as to what you did. To be honest it sounds too easy to be effective.
I agree, it seems too good to be true. I measured and cut three pieces of insulation and put them into the three compartments. I kept the paper top of the insulation even with the top of the compartments. The fifteen inch width is perfect for all three compartments (it doesn't completely cover the middle compartment). I do have some items in the compartments, but they were not full.
Try this, you will be amazed how effective this is ! And it weighs next to nothing (a few ounces) !

gotta love-it. The more sources for materials... the better for everyone
Mike,
It looks like he hasn't seen your Frost King write-up. If it's been a while since it was posted you might want to re-post it so many of the newbies can learn about it.
I did the Frost King mod on my 02 vert mn-6 over a year ago and it really made a big difference.

You have got to see the results of this mod. It takes 15 minutes at the most, costs like $5-15 (to buy batts) and weighs nothing. I think the majority of noise is coming from these wells. Fiberglass insulation is much better in stopping this sound than solid panel insulation.
Does any of this fiber glass insulation come in contact with water... I had a friend of mine ,,,,,back in the 80's,, he put that insulation in his door panels, trunk area,, and where ever he could.. Well the insulation in the doors sucked up so much water it destroyed the doors.. You have to careful what you're covering up when you soundproof, you could end up doing more harm than good..
Well, the concern would be getting fiberglass fibers everywhere!
you can get the same effect with foam, and in a pinch, carpet padding, without worrying about the fibers.
True, just adding something like a Lloyds Carpeted - Heavy Foam Cargo Mat will pretty much take care of the sound coming up through the rear compartments - it is very similar to adding DynoPad only more versitile and looks good. This was my first sound deadening step 6 years ago and it drops the noise level in the rear significantly.
