I beleive is was post 10,000 or some where in that neighborhood. The last 5 numbers of the vin is the number on production so you should be OK!

1 quart in 1700 mi won't come anywhere close to the GM definition of excessive oil consumption (or most other people's) so if you are expecting a free re-ring, you will most likely be disappointed.

So what your saying its perfectly normal to expect to put a quart of oil in a car at least once a month? Especially a car that only has 11,700 miles on the clock. Regardless, I'm completely dissatisfied with GM products and if I wouldn't have just bought this car a year ago I'd trade it in a more reliable product, its instances like this why the US automakers are losing ground to the Japanese.

As I stated earlier this car only has 11,700 miles on it, so far the roof leaks, the breaks squeak, it'll obviously have to be repainted within the next couple of years because of the low quality paint GM uses, the material that the seats is obviously low grade, (I'm sure that will have to be addressed at some point) and now I can expect to put a quart of oil in it at least once a month for as long as I own the car. Lets not forget the catalytic converter and the 02 sensor that are more than likely going to have issues due to the excess oil consumption. Heaven forbid this POS was a daily driver, it would constantly be in the shop.

Wow tug_slug...that really sucks about your Vette. Unfortunately, GM's standards call for the loss of a quart in 500 miles. Then they will deem the need to re-ring. BUT...I would recommend that you take it into your dealership with your concern. See if they will do a performance test on the oil consumption. I believe it requires them to do an oil change and then have you come back at certain mileage points to get it checked to see if you indeed have an issue that constitutes re-ringing the motor. Doesn't hurt to try. If you don't ask, you won't get. Good luck and hope things get better with your Vette!

Sorry to hear of all your woes. I recommend getting rid of your Vette right away since you think it's such a POS..why waste time with it. Go get an Import car or something else you think will be better.

Good luck

No body I know keeps their Yugo below 4000 RPM

Besides, my Yugo burns much less (and cheaper) oil than my '01 Vette.

I have just purchased a 2001, production date 8/00 and 44,000 miles, stick shift. I have put 500 -600 miles on it, oil was full up when I got it and still is, not a drop down. I have driven in the mountains and on hwy to the coast. Not much in town. Various RPM when in mountains.
Am I lucky or is it how I drive??

I feel your pain Tug, I really do. I use mine as a daily driver and now with 7 years of ownership and 90K+ miles on it, I'm not too thrilled about my oil consumption either. For the price I paid for it when it was brand spanking new I should have a car with the least amount of problems. But being a prior Vette owner ('87 black C4) and knowing and accepting the fact that it's a Chevy, and that I could forsee problems with it (and there was many more with my C4) I still went ahead and got it. Why you ask? Because I've have and always will be a Vette enthusiast through and through. No matter what the problem is, I'll still bite my tongue and put up with it. And the same goes for a lot of folks on the forum board. We'll bitch and moan about it (kinda like our girlfirends/wives) but in the end we'll still love 'em. I'd like to consider our breed kinda like the same as Harley Davidson bunch. Most know going into buying a Harley that there's gonna be problems with it... but they still end up buying it.

Thanks Quick, I also heard the GM's standards are a quart every 2000 miles. Im hoping that because my friend is the General Manager of the Dealership I bought it from will go with a quart every 2000 miles.

Thanks for the reply Butters, don't get me wrong I like the car, my first Corvette was a 1994 coupe I bought in 96 and had very few problems with it. The first was the water pump went out 1 week after the warranty expired the second being the plastic reservoirs in the side of the radiator had developed holes and had to be replaced, other than that it was a pretty good car.

I traded in the C-4 for my C-5 and because I don't drive it much I hadn't really noticed what an inferior product it really was.

I'm fortunate in the respect that a good friend of mine whose the General Manager of Chevrolet dealership sold me the car. When I took it to him yesterday (Tuesday) he replaced the rubber seal around the roof which fixed the leak, replaced the air filter, topped off the oil and is going to replace the rings after its determined exactly how much oil the car is wasting, all this was done at no charge.

The problem is his dealership is 45 miles away and if you've ever driven in Los Angeles traffic driving 45 miles can take you up to 2 hours to get to your destination depending on the traffic. When I take the car in like I did yesterday I lose a whole day with travel time and the time that the car is being worked on. Granted I could take it to a closer dealership but would have to shell out God knows how much for a new seal, air cleaner and pay for the oil they put in the car not to mention I'm still going to be without a vehicle.

I digress, my point is the Big 3 are losing their market share to the Japanese (amongst others) and situations like this is just one of many reasons why.
