I've had the Kuhmo MX runflats for about a year now. I have been very happy with them. They perform better than the Goodyears and are less noisy. For the price, you would have a hard time beating them.
I basically got mine through Tire Rack and had a Goodyear store mount them for me. You want to make sure who ever is doing the work knows what they are doing. The side walls are very stiff.
I am on my third set of rears and second set of fronts - Kumo MX non runflats. I am not worried about a flat tire, how often does that actually happen...knock on wood...and I cary a patch kit and inflation can...yeah I know it will ruin the air pressure sensor but a new sensor is cheaper than the added price of run flats...the good side of the Kumhos are that the tires are fine on the road and very affordable...the bad side is that they are noisy and last only about 10 to 12 k miles...and that stinks...they have a very low treadwear rating (180 I think)...I need all four new tires now and will not buy the Kumhos...not exactually sure whay I get but I hear good things about the Michilen Pilot sport...so who knows...
Many opinions...you must look at your use, and wear rating also if you are going to compare costs.
beearthwise said he only gets 12K miles..ouch
I like more miles out of a set.
Jim put two on the front just before he delivered the car to me in November (around $400 drive out), and I put two more on the rear in January for $361 drive out. As the treadwear rating is 380, I believe I will get a lot of good miles out of the set. My .02 worth.
An above post mentioned getting 45-55K miles on runflats. This may be true for some driving styles. However, after using mine for 2 HPDE days (1 day had 6 sessions at 15 minutes each, 1 day had 4 sessions at 20 minutes each), my OEM run-flats were hard as rocks. Now I can't get over 2000 RPMs in first gear without them breaking loose, and they have 13,000 miles on them.
As another poster mentioned, examine how you are going to use them. Dry driving only? All-season? Any auto-cross or HPDE? I am switching to GS-D3 for a good overall performer that I don't drive in cold weather. Good luck with your decision!
I need more KUMHO input please. I saw someone wasn't thrilled with the idea of Pepboy's mounting them. Has anyone been using the tire for a while and had them mounted by Pepboys. The buy 3 get 1 free deal is pretty good if the tire is worth while. $98 for the fronts and $190 for the rears. I don't race the car so I don't care about that....
I'am alittle concerned with the non-RF issue here but it doesn't seem to bother many people here and the last time I had a BAD flat was 22 years ago.
So if there are rolling the KUMHO's please fill me in on the good the bad the ugly.
Thanks
Keith
If you don't race the car, clearly go with some run flat. I am on my 2nd set of tires since the oem goodyears, which were the worst of the three. 2nd set were michelin pilot sport all season run flats, which were big improvement over my '99's oem tires for everyday driving.
when i started autocrossing, it became clear run flats were NOT going to work. so, I bought the Kumho Ecsta MX summer tires. Great for the street and much better for autocross.
I have 4 Kumho SPT's sitting in the garage waiting for my new wheels so I can't really give you much advice except to say that I got the set in stock sizes for about $550 and I got a certificate for a $40 rebate (TireRack).
I have kumho asx and the ride is a lot better then stock!
The trade off is that they won't get as good as traction off the line or handle as well as the higher performace tires, but I rarely launch the car hard or going into a turn harder then the asxs can handle. They also hae a treadwear of 420 and go good in rain (haven't tried them in snow).
I got them for $693 at discount tire with the 3 year 30k mile warranty and shipping.
I also have the Kumho ASX. I like them, but I don't race my car. They are not noisy at all, seem to handle good in dry weather and rain. I can't speak for mileage as I only have 6,000 on them but they seem to be wearing very well, but then again, I don't race my car. Just my .02
At all cost I have to get the GY RF's off the car. But being as I just got the car a few weeks ago I'm low on cash. I've seen a lot of post about how good the KUMHO's are for the money and Pepboys has a deal of buy 3 get one free. What I need to know is what KUMHO model I should look at... also are they as wide as the GY RF's or can I go to the next size wider or not bother. I like the side walls profile and how wide the RF's are so i want to keep that look.
I'm a little concerned about the non RF part of this but it doesn't seem to bother many of you. And has anyone had Pepboys mount tired for you as in do they do a good job?
Thank you
I have the KUMHO tires on my '99 coupe. I'm not sure which particular style of tire they are, as they were on the car when I bought it. I must say though that I'm unimpressed.
I plan on replacing the tires in the next couple of months (after I do my clutch install, so that I can burn them up )
They are ok when its dry, but are less than ideal when there is ANY kind of water on the roads in any amount. Also they are LOUD - the loudest tire I've ever heard. Its almost enough to drive a man insane on an extended trip.
Just my 2 cents - but I would never go with another set of these tires - no matter how cheap they were.

how can you not tell what "style" they are when it's embossed on the tire?
i can only speak for the Kumho's i had mounted on my '99, and they are quieter and better than the 1999 GY OEM tires. granted, it's 7 years later on the tire technology scale, but still...
Be careful with Pepboys, they are rough with wheels. I would not trust them with nice wheels. They once did extra work on my car which I did not approve and then forced me to pay for it, when I did and drove the car they forgot to align it. I complained to the manager ,he called me a troublemaker and told me to leave. I talked to his manager which did not help. The tire price may be good but the service is not. Also watch for the extra fees which add up quickly. Mounting, balancing, valve stems, tire damage warranty, etc.
A lot of individual choices depend on what you use the Vette for......most of mine is highway. I dunno..never had a problem with noise perception but then again I have never run anything but the GY emt's
Now, that's a real shame. My twelve minute ride to the rr station, and 15 minutes home is usually the best (almost) part of my day...sitting @ my desk too.
