I just bought a 2001 with 20,000 on it, would it be wise to purchase a warranty for it? The car is in excellent shape and when I had it looked at by a mechanic before buying it and he told me this car was in excellent condition and whoever owned it definately took care of it. If you think I should get a warranty who would you go with? I was leaning towards not getting a warranty, I would drive the car only about 7,500 miles a year.
Extended warranties are simply insurance policies. If you have one, it is just peace of mind, if you need it you'll be glad you have it.
I did my '01 at 14K. You should be able to get the GMPP from the original selling dealer. You can renew it once you have them through Ken Fitchner on the forum.

Just got one for my '04 from Fitchner. I'm pretty sure it needs to still be under factory warranty (3 yrs/36K miles) for a GMPP... I got mine with a few weeks left on the factory warranty
If it is within reasonable mileage you can return to the originating chevy dealer to purchase the GMPP. Within 3 months or 3K miles of the GMPP expiring, Ken can do the renewel. If you get outside those parameters he can't help and you'll need to return to originating dealer again and pay a premium over Ken's pricing.
I am a finance manager worked in the past for the "Big 3" and i can tell you if I was going to purchase a extended service contract (never a bad idea) for a GM product I would ONLY buy a GMPP thats it like for a Ford id only buy a Ford ESP and for Chrysler Id only buy a Daimler-Chrysler service contract. Your going to have way better coverage, a wider range of shops that accept it plus your always going to have a GM shop to work on your vehicle.
What would be a typical cost for a 36 month warranty on just the big ticket items? I am thinking about it, but if it is going to cost me $2000, I think I will take my chances.

I bought mine new and never considered an extended warranty. My original ends this spring and I'm glad. Warranties just make it tempting to let some unknown (good or bad) mechanic work on your car. I've never in my life found it worth the aggravation.
I have Warranty Direct.
So far, pleased with how they do business.
I bought my 02 with 9400 miles and picked up 4 yr Warranty Direct Extended Warranty with $0 deductible. Wide range of companies accept WD including all the Chevy dealers in my area. I'm only going to be driving around 3500 miles per year probably. Nice to know it's there if needed though. Just realize car has to be stock or it will void the extended warranty (no aftermarket radio or even aftermarket exhaust).
Be in the range of say $1600 - 2600. Depending, if you know the originating dealer and get a little bit off retail then it'd be a little cheaper. Now when your renewing a policy, Ken Fetchner Chevy supports the forum members to get a better deal on the renewals.
I very strongly recommend Warranty Direct with the zero deductable. When I bought my 2003 a few weeks ago, the finance manager tried to sell me the GMPP plan. I asked him how his plan (GMPP) compared with Warranty Direct. He brought the info up on his computer, compared coverages and cost and told me to go with WD, that GMPP couldn't touch it. My parents have used WD on their Vette and Mercedes for the past four years and are very happy with them. You may want to make sure the shop you are going to use for service accepts WD. But if they don't, WD will send you the check for repairs and you can make up the difference.
anyone heard of Continental Warranty? they offered me one on the '02 Z06 i'm purchasing this weekend. the car is GM certified and i can get the "major gaurd" GMPP for it (2075 bucks for 3/36, $50 deductible). but continental is offering a 6 year or 100K on the odometer for about 1000 more, but 0% interest payments can be made. the car im buying has 32K miles on it right now. they warranty work is paid by credit card over the phone directly to the repair facility. plus they'll do rental car, roadside assistance, and cover just about everything the major gaurd covers, except for interior fabric and carpeting.
i don't know much about them, but it does sound like a better deal than the GMPP major gaurd. OH plus i have to pay sales tax on the major gaurd if im buying it from the dealer (to have financed in with the car). any thoughts? thanks!

Never heard of them. May be the better deal but are they going to be around in 6 yrs? When I bought my car I received several offers of extended warranties from companies I never heard of. Even if you have to pay more you are better off going with a bigger name when it comes to the Extended warranty - at least I felt better going that way. As I knew those warranties were no problems to use at any of my local Chevy dealerships (I checked with them before buying the warranty).
At least with GMPP or Warranty Direct the odds are they will be around in a few years and they both have a good reputation.
3 Reasons Why for me:
- Pricing and Pre-Inspection ~ no one else had this.
- Wear -n- Tear Coverage ~ no one else had this.
- Overheat Coverage ~ no one else had this.
Make sure you read the fine print. Warranties are like Insurances, they HATE to pay out but LOVE to collect. Pick the top 3 for you, compare them, pick one and drive with no worries mon.
on the warranty direct website, they have Z06 listed. but when i pick it, it says "we're sorry. warranty direct does not offer coverage for this vehicle." this is what i run into a lot with warranty companies... they'll do a warranty on a regular corvette coupe or vert, but not the Z06 (because they consider it a "high performance car").
i have 30 days to choose either the continental or GMPP. i'll check around at local performance shops, corvette shops, and dealerships and get their opinions. they're the ones that have to get paid during a warranty claim, so they should have a good opinion as to which warranties are better to work with. thanks for the advice. i leave tonite for pensacola to pick up my car! should be fun.
