2 1/2 year code problem solved for $20
Ever since I bought my 2004 new in July 04 I would get a code every once in a while P0445. (leak in the evap system). I'd clear the code and no problems for the next few times I drove the car then "poof" on comes the code again. It was just annoying.
Heads, cam, headers etc. NO codes ever then this stupid P0445 pops up. Finally about a month ago I break down and pop $20 for a new gas gap. (the old one looked fine)
Now the code has been gone for over a month now. Problem solved for $20.
Guess I should have changed the gas cap 2 1/2 years and 15000 dollars ago.

I would have put a blower on it before the gas cap - that would have increased the pressure, thus preventing the code...
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

It is also covered under the emissions warranty.

Wish that were true. I had to pay $19 for a cap on a 1997 Ford Explorer back in 2002. I feel your pain, but I'm sure it was worth $20 to make the code go away!

I pity the fool who replaces all 500 emissions hoses, and then realizes it was the gas cap (ask me why : ( )

I had the same problem on my '04. The dealer replaced it under warranty. Emission systems are warranteed for 7 or 8 years by law.
Maybe 10?
OK. Looked it up. Federal law 8 years or 80K.

Right, However I do not let the Dealers work on my car. Warranty or Not.

My 99 been doing this since I got it a year ago, Guys at autozone said it was more than likely the gas cap. When I took it to dealer they said its an old code cleared it and it didn't come right back so all was OK as far as they were concerned. Week later it was back, so I just bought a code reader just to keep clearing it out every time it showed up. Now I'll go get a new cap and try that. Thanks for posting this.
