Default Consumer Reports "Fastest Car"

Just got the new Consumer reports auto edition.

Fastest cars 0-60:
Viper 4.2
ZO6 4.3
911 4.4
Lotus Elise 4.6
Corvette Coupe 5.0
Subaru WRX 5.2

Two vettes in the top 6 ain't bad. I think they have the ZO6 rated slower than it is!

I assume that must be a a straight line, on last report 11% of vipers that were purchased new never made it home, lots of power and NO WAY to control it.

Usually they will take the results and run it through their own "criteria" and no matter what the category the Toyotas and Hondas are at the top of their list. They were salivating when they both introduced larger trucks as it gave them more ways to pick them first. Not bad vehicles-just not always the exceptional unbreakable 500K mile, never need anything, haloed cars they always claim.

Just ask the the Toyota V6 owners from late 90's and early 2000's who have engines full of sludge

This list was just for fastest cars. No Toyotas or Hondas mentioned. I do agree that the japenese cars are almost always at the top for reliability. My civic was the best car I have ever owned as far as quality.
Made in Ohio too!

I agree that their data usually seems a bit off...but as for the late 90's Toyota V6...Ive got a 99 tacoma 3.4L that runs perfect w/ 115k on the ticker! And its a 4x4 that gets used and abused on the trails! Wouldnt trade it for the world. (well ok, maybe for another vette!)

Not sure when that report came out, but I test drove a 2007 Viper and it handled like a dream.

Don't laugh, I'm sure the goverment will make them re-certify the tests after it is revealed that they ran the cars in reverse, and the camry's all had bad transmissions.......So they will replace the trans in the camry's, run them against the other cars, still in reverse, and BAM the fastest car is again ANYTHING from Japan.

Hopefully if it was a 5.0 it would actually be a 305... A Ford 302 in a Vette? Now I am glad I have not eaten breakfest.

Check the history of the small block. The bow-tie 302 was the real deal.

Yep. Gen-1 Z28 engine. 283 bore with 327 crank if memory serves. High-winding, temperamental, screaming little critter. Solid lifters, aluminum high rise, Holley 3310 780cfm mechanical secondary double-pumper 2.02 fuelie heads. I think a friend who had one said the headers came in a box in the trunk, from the factory, and the local Chevy dealer installed them.

Ran with the Mustang Boss 302. Both were de-tuned to make the insurance weasels and corporate types happy. Both liked to run at the top of the tach. To get in the right mood to drive one, you started by slamming your fingers in the door. Both were designed to be Trans Am series racers (Pontiac used the Trans Am name without permission, and had to give the owners - SCCA I think - a few bucks per car for all those years ).

Now we get more power from a manageable engine, thanks to fuel injection and good engine management, but once in a while, you need to revisit the past.

You have it backwards, small journal 327 block, 283 crank. Short stroke, big bore = high winder.

Sure was a great little engine.........not a lot of torque, but she'd really wind up quickly just like you said.........an engine you could twist pretty tight.

I remember those cars...built from assorted GM parts, I recall. They took 283 and 327 parts on hand and reconfigured them to get the 302. Awsome ...LT
