Changed the oil on my 97' today, how do I reset oil life %? I held the reset button with it showing just went to 3 blanks then back to previous reading.
Thanks,
Josh
You had the engine running when you tried to reset it didn't you? If you do it with the engine off, it'll go to 100% when you hit reset. If you do it with the engine running, it'll show those three blank lines and then go back to the previous reading.

Other option is with the engine off, key on, push the gas pedal down to the floor three times in five seconds. It'll reset to 100%. This works with most G.M.'s.
Looks like they've provided you with all the info to reset oil life %
I've got a quick-question in relation to this... I'd initially changed my oil back in Jan 07, reset the oil life, etc. When my tranny (A4) was rebuilt in late January, they had to disconnect the battery during the process...
Well this caused my oil life to reset back at 100%... It is now at 79%, but my question is, will the sensor automatically readjust to what the oil quality actually is, or does is go off of how many miles are actually put since last oil change?
Basically I'm trying to find out how accurate I am, should I deduct the 10% it initially used, or should I go off of what's showing on the percentage now?

Deduct that 10%, your oil life monitor really should be at 69% instead of 79%, as the monitor does not check the condition of the oil.

The oil life monitor isn't a sensor as such. It's a program in the computer that takes many different factors that affect oil life into consideration. For all it knows, you could have filled the crankcase with anti-freeze. Or that El-Cheapo oil that you got for a good price.
If you know how many miles you have on the oil, I'd change the oil based on mileage and be on the conservative side.

That's what I thought... Thanks for the help! There is no way I will put the 3,000 miles before the next oil change, so I'll plan on changing it when the DIC states 25% oil life. Which will mean I'm actually at about 15% or less...
