Common sense says it is the oil pump but I have read about sensor failure. I'm not about to run it but is there another way to check oil pressure? I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

PM Ja03C5 he might have an answer for you. He found his wiring harness melted. After he replaced numerous oil sensors. That is all the info I know, I'm sure he'll be glad to help you with the rest.
If you had no oil pressure by the time the gauge showed zero you would have been experiencing other symptoms, such as ungodly engine noises. Faulty sensors have been extremely common, I had it happen myself. I'd bet it's most likely that. It's not too difficult to replace. Unfortunately it's in an inconvenient place to get to.
Wouldn't hurt to stick an oil pressure gauge on the engine and check the pressure. If you have pressure, then it's either the sensor or the circuit. It's always a good idea to verify that you actually do have sufficient oil pressure before assuming it's a bad sensor.
doesnt the faulty oil pressure sensor usually show pegged?

That's what I thought. 130psi. Can it read zero when it fails too? Did it also throw warning lights and a DIC message. I bet the ECM would not allow the engine to run if it was reading zero pressure too. I don't know about the LSX, but the LT-1 had a separate sensor for the ECM and the gauge. If you have a good scanner, you could plug in and see that the ECM is reading.
that would be enough to scare the crap out of you ...mine pegged when it went and most ive heard did the same.
corvette oil sensors are like a box of chocolate you never know what youre gonna get.........forest gump
