When my tank is full, I smell gas fumes. Really noticeable when car is in garage. After driving for 30 miles or so, no more smell. Just started happening last few months (first 6 years - no problem).
3. Are you topping off when you fill up? Don't top off, you need the extra room leftover when the pumps automatically clicks off to allow for the expansion of the gasoline. If you overfill the fumes will enter the evaporative control system and could foul it.
I'd say, don't top off and you will notice the smell goes away.

I don't top off, when the pump clicks off the first time, I am done.
Thanks for suggestions - 1 & 2 sound like possibilites.

Any ideas? TIA
i had to have the left fuel tank replaced due to cracks at the top. seems to be a manufacturing issue on many c5's. same symptoms as yours. was definantly worse with a full tank.

Has this issue been pushed with GM? Sounds like it could be a safety recall isue.
My left hand tank is finally being replaced because of a crack around crossover pipe connection to tank. Would leak once over half tank. I hope yours is'nt the same problem as the whole transaxle has to come out. It,s expensive and time consuming especially Down Under. Hope I get it back next week. I really need a drive after 7 weeks at the shop.
Mine is leaking from right tank, at the top where it is connected to a hose or pipe. Am still waiting on GMPP adjustor to get out to shop to ok repair. I know it won't be cheap, price of tank alone is about $650.

What's this about an OK from a GMPP adjuster? Is this a covered part or not? is it an emission 8 and 80? or a policy repair or percentage of the repair? Keep us posted.

My car is in an independent vette shop. GMPP won't do anything until an adjustor comes out and actually sees the problem. Yes - total BS but not much I can do. Meanwhile - GMPP is paying for my Grand Prix rental - actually not a bad car for a sedan.
I have the exact same problem with my 2002 and was fixing to list this on the forum. I will look at the problems noted and relay what I have found as soon as I can get it on a lift. Also waiting for a set of OEM wheels from House of Wheels. My right polished rear cracked and was leaking air.
left fuel sensor & right fuel module replaced (fuel gauge had been acting up again, after having sensors replaced about 3 years ago)
steering wheel position sensor replaced (was throwing faulty codes)
GMPP paid for everything. Total parts & labor: $2,373. Approximately (labor charges for tank and sensors were lumped together) $1060 of that was for replacing the gas tank. GMPP also paid for $240 of car rental (8 days).
