Has anyone cut and welded close the stock H-pipe? It would seem that this is the quickest way to have true dual exhaust and, retain the stock system. Or, does the after market x-pipe balance the engine pulses?
Like to hear your opinions.
chris
It will balance the pressure of the exhaust pulses in the system, reducing interior and exterior sound while increasing power.
When my buddy added an H-pipe crossover to his true dual 64 1/2 mustang 289, it did increase the SOP power and smoothed out the idle.
Typically you want the crossover closer the collector. GM puts it way behind the cats... probably an emission or space available thing... I dunno.
But, why does a car need an H or an X, other than to smooth out the sound?
As far as GM's placement of the H, if you put it before the second set of O2 sensors, you'd never know what side they were getting their reading from.
I just think if you are putting on a free flowing exhaust system, I don't see why you'd need the X or the H.
When I meant it smoothed out the idle, it wasn't only the sound of the idle. The engine didn't lope as hard with the mild cam it had. It seemed to breathe easier if that makes sense, decreased the backpressure. Like I said before, its there to balance the pressure between the cylinder banks. You can try removing it, it will sound different for sure, but for performance and backpressure reasons, I wouldn't remove it from mine. But hey, thats just me.
Your reasoning on the placement of the stock crossover for the 02 sensors makes a sense to me, good point.

In a couple hours, I'll be picking mine up. I'll let yall know how I like it without the crossover. If I decide I don't like the sound (or whatever), he's going to put an H pipe in the system for me.
H pipe would be better for your low end, slightly deeper sound, but will be more gurgly and maybe some popping on decel and between shifts
The X-pipe will be better for your top end hp, more even sound and will be a little higher in pitch.
Most people seem to go with an X pipe, probably for the higher end performance and gurgly/poppy exhausts aren't as popular.
However, I get a lot of compliments on my B&B/SLP H-pipe setup. It's different... the gurgle it makes while decelerating in 3rd or 4th at 30-40mph is sweeeeet. I think I may have to change it if I got LT's, it may be just too loud.

You're comparing H to X....I'll be able to let you know what it's like with neither!
