Default Clutch Replacement Cost

I have about 29k miles on my '02 ZO6. At some point I know I'll need to have the clutch replaced. I plan to keep the car stock and was looking for some feedback on anyone's experience was and specifically what was the cost?
Thanks, Team Ruby

On a stock application you will be looking around 9.0 hours of Labor and with you stating you plan to keep the car stock I would run the LS7/LS2 clutch / flywheel combo or go SPEC Stage1 . The upgraded combo from GM for the new Z06 works great, light pedal feel, and awesome holding power, the SPEC is much cheaper (300 range) versus (600 range) since with the SPEC you will only need to get your flywheel resurfaced where the LS7 requires the usage of the newer style flywheel. Good luck and hope this is of aid in your decision.

I paid $500 for installation. I'm currently running LS7 clutch/flywheel combo and like it so far I wish the pedal was a bit heavier though it's too light for my taste. Gene Culley at www.gmpartshouse.com has the best price on this package and very fast at shipping + providing you with tracking number. Also while you're there might as well upgrade your slave cylinder to an '04 Z06 one would be a good idea. Good luck

Here is some well considered advice.

Don't change the clutch unless it shows true signs of failure.

At stock power levels stick with the LS6 clutch; it's a very fine clutch.

Avoid the LS7 clutch. It pales compared to the LS6 clutch, especially for your power level.

Clutch is in the front, not far from the driver's right knee.

I am saying that the LS7 clutch sucks. Every C6Z owner that I know who races hates the LS7 clutch. That was not the case when we were all driving C5Zs with the LS6 clutch.

The LS6 clutch is a proven, battle hardened clutch. The LS7 clutch is whimpy and glazes when given even minimal slip. Avoid the LS7 clutch if you intend to do any launches.

If you are driving a C5Z at near stock power levels, stick with the proven LS6 clutch.

I hope that's clear.

Thanks for the input guys. I had originally posted the question also to get an idea what the out the door cost is for labor and parts. I drive mostly city and the clutch gets used a lot. It's not showing any signs of slipping yet but I was just wondering how expensive it is to replace. I have asked the local dealer but they haven't been able to give me an answer.
Thanks, Team Ruby

Why are worrying about it now? The stock clutch should last you a LONG time if you stay near the stock power level. I removed mine at 50K miles and it had seen it's fair share of nitrous and it was still in great shape. Only problem I ever had was the sticking clutch pedal and that was my fault for not changing the fluid.

Renegade, good question. You must be single. I love the car and want to hang on to it for a while longer. My wife would rather see me drive something more fitting for my age whatever that might be. I was trying to outline the cost of ownership out over the next four or five years and paint a worse case scenario that looks better than buying another car that I wouldn't like as much. For her the car is one-dimensional and it is hard for me at times to get all my boat gear into and I occasionally end up borrowing her car and she can't drive mine (stick).
Thanks, Team Ruby

I see no one has answered you about costs so I will give you my experience. First, I upgraded to the complete LS7/LS2 package including new slave and remote bleeder. Total costs for part from supporting vendors was approx. $700. Having the most trusted shop in town replace took 1 day and $1000. I also had all fluids changed and upgraded too. When it comes to labor I do not look for the cheapest, I look for the best. FYI, I agree with Ranger. After 400mi of track time I do not like this clutch on the road course as well as the stocker. Stay with the LS6.

LOL sure am. That way I have the car going in to the relationship and when she sees all the mods I have done she will understand that the car will always be there. On a more serious note, upkeep on our cars costs alot of $. If you learn how to do the labor yourself or get some friends that know how you can save yourself over half the cost. I do seriously thing though if you stay near stock power level your clutch will last for years.

So I guess it looks like an easy $2000 to buy a clutch and get it installed? Thats pretty damn expensive. How hard would it be to DIY?

Here's a couple links to clutch installations to give the DIY'er an idea of what is involved.

Thanks for sharing. After that I think I will have a shop do it. Also Ranger is right about the clutches, stay with your LS6. It has to be a sturdy unit, since mine still operates, even with all the abuse.
