What does it take for a C5 to be on the same performance level as a stock 02 C5zo6?
Intake
Headers
Full exhaust without cats
dyno tune
3.90 gears
I am thinking that should do it. What do you guys think???
That would get you fairly close, although, you have to remember that the Z06 is lighter. This comparison is assuming you mean straight line performance. There are other things like suspension that make the Z06 such a great car.
You could do always do what I did, not only am I much faster than a stock Z06 but I can run on a road course just as well with one.
At one point I had similar mods on my car (Callaway intake, Corsas, Dynatech w/ hiflow cats, 3.90, Dynotech supermax, dynotuned) and pulled 351 Rwhp/365 rwt. Added cam, underdrive pulley now at 396rwhp and 375 rwt.
It'll get you close! You could do a cam(this should get it w/the other add ons too!) or head and cam(w/the other add ons) and whip the stock Z06! But it'll cost yeah!
I would say that should about do it...just to be sure though If it's an A4 to get a high stall to go with the 3:90 gears and if it's a pre 01 to get an Ls6 intake manifold and you could also have the throttle body ported and to top it off a tune...thats about as far as you can go without going in the motor. Good luck!

I doubt you will make up 60 hp and 100lbs less with intake, exhaust, and gears. What does it matter if you can match a stock Z06 in a drag race, anyway?
well, what matters is speed. I know stock 02 ZO6's run high 11's- mid 12's. So a C5 with the mods listed should be a solid 12sec car I believe. All I want is to have the same performance or a mid 12sec car without going into the engine or FI.

Buy a Z. Instead of spending all of the money to mod your C5. The price has come down pretty well. You can get an 02-04 from the mid 20's to low 30's.
Well the reason of this post was to determine if I should wait a little more, save up some more money to buy a ZO6 or if I could pull out the same performance with just a C5.
Thanks for the help, I pretty much know now what to go with.

Good luck on your search. I started with the Z. Love the car. Don
Just buy a Z06. This discussion has been had on here about a million times before. Sure you can go as fast in a straight line, but there's a lot more to it than that. Just a little money can make a Chevette fast in a straight line...

All you need is a fixed roof coupe, add Z06 wheels, brake ducts, and a Z06 badge, and youre money!
I would think the above mods would get you pretty close. Probably a good 15 horse shy of a stock Z, but the gears would come close to making up for the difference. You are a bit heavier too, though... I imagine you'd still be just a bit slower. Just my $0.02.
I second the motion of starting with a Z06, if a stock Z06 is all you want performance-wise. By the time you buy an equal-year C5, and do the work you are talking about, you will have spent the difference between that and a Z06, anyway... If, however, you want to do a cam, heads, etc, you might as well start with a FRC; you can have a modded FRC for less than what you would have paid to start out with a newer Z06. Not to slam them or anything... That was just my philosophy.
Does anybody know how different insurance rates are between the two?
I don't think there's much, if any, of a difference. I had a quote on a Z06 a year or two back, and was amazed at how reasonable it was. I wound up with an FRC, and the insurance is reasonable as well.
