Default Side pipes for C5?

I was at my Vette shop last week and he had a sharp black Viper for sale (I REALLY wanted to drive it) and noticed the side exhaust outlets in the rocker panels at the bottom of the doors. anybody seen or done this on a C5 or would it look too C2, C3?

For the most part, its not possible because of the design of the hydroform frame and the design of the rocker rails. I've seen a couple of hack jobs to achieve it but it either doesn't look right or they actually end up cutting through the frame which is not a good idea.

Look at a C5's hydroformed chassis... you'd have to cut a hole in the floor and the frame rail and rocker.

This has been discussed on the Forum somewhere previously - as mentioned above, it is next to impossible to do on the C5 because of the frame, and you would have to punch holes in the frame to run the exhaust thru

I DON'T remember for sure, but I think the C5R frame or exhaust was designed differently than the C5 which allows the C5R to have side exhaust - I COULD be WRONG - I don't exactly remember

The early RT/10 and the newer SRT/10 came with side pipes.

I thought and designed a NASCAR style side pipe for the C5. I'd need to fab one of cardboard and make sure it fit, but it basically was a matter of turning the exhaust 90 degrees and turing the 3" pipe into a 1/2 inch 1' long rounded square.

It would hang down about 1" so their would be rubbing issues though.

Only time I have seen it is on the C5Rs. IMO, there is not enough clearance under the floor pans to run sidepipes.

Default If you want to bad enough, it is all a matter of money

I had it done on my C4 open road car (see blue rig in sig). These are not those funky ones that were on the market years ago. Those went out to the rear of the car and back to the side. I had to have custom headers and pipes made. Then I was putting a Greenwood body kit on so that is what covers the system until it exits near the back of the door. Very spendy to make, but love the sound at 200+.

PS This car could be yours it is for sale!!

Here is how to do this:

1. Raise the Vette height to approximately 3 feet off the ground.

2. Take a run to TJ (Baja) and get Jose and his multiple son's (the ones that haven't moved to the US yet) to weld up some 4-5 inch sewer pipes in a configuration that allows them to run from the exhaust flange to just behind the front wheel wells.

3. Then, have them use a 90 degree elbow to connect the strait pipes which will run along side the Vette, under the door, and to the rear tire well.

4. At the end of those pipes, place another 90 degree elbow - pointed AWAY from the Vette (be sure Jose/Juan/Jesus do this correctly, and not point the end toward the body of the Vette as is their natural instinct).

OR

A. Buy a FRIGIN Viper.

NAFTA or not, why send work out of our country? I see no flaws in your design, but a person could go to Lowe's or Home Depot and pick up some threaded steel water pipe, a shopping cart full of fittings, and do it all their own-self. Not only that, but the water pipe would be heavier walled and probably last a lot longer than some cheap foreign stuff. If the black steel look is unacceptable, you could always spray the whole thing with some aluminum silver rattle can paint.

Hey, want to collaborate on this??? I can see a future in it for us. I could draw up plans of your design, add my parts list, and we could sell the package on Ebay! We could make enuff to pay for the air in our runflats.

Heck - we could make the business a success just by selling on the Forum (in C5 of course, but maybe the members in C6 would be interested).

As to keeping manufacturing here (US) my original thoughts is why bring more illegals here - send the work to them down south

Our business would make a large dent in Corsa and Borla - time to short sell their stock

It looks like you raised the C4, put the pipse on, and then covered it all with the body kit. That car looks much higher than a stock C5.

I asked this same question a while back in a thread
for all intents and purposes, you cant do it

that said, if you REALY want to do it, this is how I would go:

headers exiting out the rear of the front wheel wells, running the pipes down the side (outside) of the car
widebody kit to cover the pipes, and put a hole in it wherever you want the exit to be

relatively simple, but probably extremely expensive
