Default Needs a quart every 800 miles

My '01 z06 needs a quart of oil every 800 miles. Something has to be wrong. Any recalls? I've read in other forums where the rings needed replacing. I have a Halltech TRIC and ported throttle body installed. Will that void the warranty?

thanks

There has been some piston ring issues, but I wouldn't fall over dead on that consumption level, depending on how hard you are running it. If the plugs aren't fouled, fill it up and be happy it doesn't say Toyota on the valve covers....

There's been a great deal of discussion about this issue, here and elsewhere on the internet. Some '01 cars were plagued with this problem, and some appeared to be unaffected. Apparently the problem was addressed for '02 with a new ring design. Some members have had their rings replaced by GM, and some are in the process now. In order to qualify for this, you'll have to arrange an oil consumption test with your favorite GM dealer.

Whether your add-on parts will cause warranty issues depends mostly on your dealer's attitude toward such things. Some dealers are more tolerant of aftermarket parts than others. In my opinion, if you want to pursue warranty relief for your oil consumption problem, your best bet would be to put the car back into stock condition, take it to dealer and set up the oil consumption test, and proceed from there.

You will find many posts about this problem if you search previous threads.

Yes a real weird situation for sure...I have seen posts where 2 cars same build week, one burns oil like he## the other one burns none...And the two vehicles have similar miles on them and driven same way...To this day i still cannot figure this one out

That oil consumption is not as bad as many. No recalls. How many miles do you have on your car? It seems that Chevy wants you to have at least 5000 before they will discuss it with you, and some owners have reported improvements with more miles.

Hmm, good point. I only have 4k miles on the car. I'll wait until I get to 5k, change out the oil and see what happens.

Thanks

My 2001 Z06 took one quart at 800 miles, then changed oil and filter at 1,000, but used 10W/30 instead of the thinner 5W/30. So far 1500 miles and no more oil burning. I hope this will work.

Mine used 3 quarts between 4000 and 8000 miles it now has 10000 and so far have not had to add any. I am getting ready to service and take on long road trip and to driving school I'll see if results still hold. Mine has seemed to improve with mileage.

Hey Rob, are they doing to change the pistons also? I'm asking because my GM dealer only replaced the rings & now I'm asveraging 900-1,000 miles per quart & my dealer is saying I should be getting a minimum of 1,500-1,700 miles per quart.
Thanks,

Mine was using a quart every 800 miles for the first 5-6000 miles.
I now get between 1500 and 2000 miles before she asks for more.

thanks
